DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

Rev. Brother J. Hickey, of the Christian Brothers, Strathfield, New South Wales, is at present on a visit to Dunedin, and'is staying with the local community.

On Saturday (St. Patrick's Day) there will be Solemn High Mass at St. Patrick's Basilica, South Dunedin, commencing at 9.30 o'clock. A panegyric on St. Patrick will be preached by Rev. Father Morkane, rector of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel.

A meeting of those interested in the Christian Brothers' football teams will be held at the school on Tuesday evening, March 27, when business of importance will be brought forward.

An excellent programme has been arranged for the national concert in celebration of St. Patrick's Day, to be given both at the Burns Hall in the city and Town Hall, South Dunedin, on Saturday evening, in aid of the Catholic education fund. Popular vocalists who are contributing specially selected items are Mrs. Wilfred Andrews, Mrs. S. A. Foote, Misses F. Gardner, Mildred Gillions, and Kathleen Grave, Messrs. S. Taylor, T. J. Hussey, A. Rawlinson, and D. Fogarty. Choruses will be given by pupils of St. Dominic's College and the St. Vincent's Orphanage Choir; Misses Adeline McGrath and Marie Major will render a pianoforte duet, Mr. J. A. Wallace a violin solo, and Mr. D. Whelan a tenor horn solo; dances will be given by Mr. Clark's pupils and Miss Peggy Fraher. Miss Clara Hughes will be accompanist at Burns Hall and Miss Laura Hawke at the South Dunedin Town Hall.

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, and incidentally in celebration of the golden jubilee of St. Joseph's branch, the Hibernians of Dunedin will approach in a body the Holy Table at St. Patrick's Basilica at the nine o'clock Mass on Sunday next (18th inst.), and will afterwards assemble for breakfast in the adjoining schoolroom. The jubilarian branch is to mark the important occasion by a social on Tuesday evening, the 20th inst.

Widespread regret (says the local paper) was felt when the news reached Mataura of the death which occurred recently at Dunedin of Master Robert Clarence Thorn, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. W. P. Thorn, Wyndham Road, Mataura. The late Master Thorn went to Dunedin to spend the Christmas holidays and there became ill, and serious complications followed with fatal results. "Clarie," who attained his 16th year of age on February 18, was a general favorite with all who were acquainted with him. He was attended by Rev. Father P. J. O'Neill, South Dunedin, during the whole of his illness. The funeral was

largely attended. Very Rev. Father O’Donnell officiated at the interment in the Mataura Cemetery. Much sympathy is felt for the bereaved parents. —R.I.R. ST. PATRICK’S BASILICA CHOIR, SOUTH DUNEDIN. The annual meeting of the St. Patrick’s Basilica Choir, held during the week, was attended by a full muster of members. The president (Rev. Father Delany) in moving the adoption of the annual report thanked the choir members for their attendance during the year, and, on behalf of the congregation, appreciation of the music rendered at the sacred meremonies. The following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year : —President, Rev Father Delany; conductor, Mr. W. L. McEvoy; organist, Miss Mary Kane, A.T.C.L. ; committee — G. Davis, A. Rodden, A. Clancy, J. Ahearn, Messrs. A. Heffernan and J. Rodden. Votes of thanks to the president for his intercut in the choir’s welfare, the conductor for his untiring services, and to all those who had kindly helped during the year, concluded an enthusiastic meeting.
