DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

Rev. Father R. C. Oxenham, 0.P., of Adelaide, is at present a visitor to Dunedin and guest at the Bishop's Palace. Concerts under the one auspices will be given by the same artists at the Burns Hall in the city and at the Town Hall, South Dunedin, on Saturday evening week (March 17) in celebration of St. Patrick's Day. As the proceeds are intended to be applied to Catholic educational requirements, and as no effort has been spared to secure the best talent possible to contribute the programme, it is anticipated that there will be crowded audiences. ' l The quarterly meeting of St. Joseph's branch of the Hibernian Society was held on Tuesday evening. Bro. J. J. Marlow, jun., presided, and there was a large attendance. Six new members were proposed and one initiated. A mark of respect was shown to the memory of the late Bro. O'Gorman. The jubilee committee reported that arrangements for the celebration of that event were complete, and the District Deputy (Bro. J. J. Marlow, sen.) appealed for a full attendance of members at the Communion breakfast on Sunday week. - <X~>

Oamaru (From our own correspondent.) • . March 4. During the month there will be Mass at the following country stations:—On the 11th at Ngapara, Windsor, and Richmond; on the 18th at Duntroon (9 a.m.), Kurow (11

a.m.), and Georgetown; on the 25th at Windsor and Ngapara.

• During the past week a second beautiful side altar of colored marble has been erected in the Basilica. The usual preparations for St. Patrick's concert are being made, and this year the date has been fixed for the 19th inst. The concert is deservedly popular, and usually ranks among the best of the year. Mr. Watters, who left us last week for Palmerston North, although not a member of our congregation, will be a distinct loss to the Catholic community here, as he most ungrudgingly gave his services whenever there was anything on, and his beautiful voice will be much missed at concerts and in the church. Prior to his departure Mr. Watters was given a complimentary concert and civic farewell by the Oamaru people, and he carries with him a host of good wishes for success in his new sphere.

Fnvercargill (From our Greymouth correspondent.) March 5. To record that St. Mary's Basilica was packed from the sanctuary to the doors conveys but an inadequate idea of the great concourse of people that assembled in the church on Sunday evening for the. closing ceremony of the mission conducted for the past two weeks by Very Rev. Father Whelan ami Rev. Father Duffy, of the Redemptorist Order. Every available space was occupied, the sanctuary being crowded, while the nuns' chapel and the choir gallery had to be requisitioned to provide accommodation. Father Whelan preached an impressive sermon, and after imparting the Papal Blessing he congratulated all concerned on the great success of the mission-ami that despite most inclement weather during the greater part, of the time. At the Masses in the morning record crowd's approached the Holy Table, and truly it was an inspiring sight. On next Sunday (11th inst.) the Confraternity of the Sacred Heart will be established in Invercargill at the evening devotions, commencing at 7 o'clock. Very Rev Father Whelan, C.SS.R,, will preach on tin- occasion. A very strong parochial committee has beet, formed to take in hand the building of a new Marist Brothers' school A central site of about eight acres has been procured and preliminary arrangements for the raising of the necessary funds are well in hand. St. Patrick's concert will be held in the Municipal Theatre on Monday, March 19, and promises to eclipse all previous efforts. Already over £IOO in cash is in hand from the sale of tickets, so financial success is more than assured. The proceeds will be devoted to the schools' buildmg fund. Mr. D. J. Corcoran, Crown Lands Ranger, has received advice of his transfer to the Otago Lands Department, with headquarters at Dunedin. He will take up his new duties about the beginning of next month. <W> _ St. Vincent's Orphanage, South Dunedin The final meeting in connection with the recent carnival in aid of the.St. Vincent's Orphanage building fund was held on last Sunday evening at St. Patrick's Schoolroom, South Dunedin.
