Our Sports Summary

TIMARTJ. The Caledonian Society's annual sports held here on the Ist and 2nd inst. were a great success, and reflected credit on the officials. Amongst the officers and judges are a number of our parishioners who have had a wide experience in athletics, viz. Mr. Wm. Hall (who has been president for three years), Mr. John O'Leary (treasurer and starter), also Messrs. Chas. Hall, J. B. Crowley, P. Cosgrove, W. Angland, P. Lysaght, and M. Houlihan. ' A great number of our co-religionists figured prominently in the prize list: Phil O'Shea (champion track and road cyclist of Australasia) is a very popular competitor, and gave a splendid exhibition of cycling; F. Hoffman —a promising young cyclist—also did remarkably well. In the field sports the following were successful:—Hot, step, and jump, J. W. O'Connor and W. Quirke; high jump, E. P. Ryan, J. Sullivan, and E. R. O'Neil; long jump, J. O'Connor, W. Quirke, and J. Sullivan putting the stone, P. Murphy and M. O'Connor; throwing the hammer, W. O'Connor and P. Murphy; tossing the caber, W. Shea; wrestling (Cumberland), M. MoKenna; catch-as-catch-can, N. Devine; quoits, J. Heney and M. Lawlor; boys' races, K. Hall and J. McAuliffe. The following girls were successful in the dancing competitions—M. Kyle, Z. Beri, E. McCarthy, M. McCarthy, M. McElhincy, and M. Matheson.

Tho accession of 10 winsome girls is unPatrick’s Swimming Club was held in the Century Baths, Craigie Aycnuo last evening, when there was an encouraging entry and a good number of spectators. About a dozen swimmers praticipated in the race, a 50 yards handicap, Messrs. J. B. Crowley and J. Collins acting as handicappers, Mr. M. Angland as starter, and Mr. J. Joyce as timekeeper. The race was an exciting one, the winner being in doubt until the touch. The placings were: —■ T. Mullan (lOsec), 1; J. Crowley (9sec), 2; 0. Clark (9sec), 3. A .few members intend to enter for the competitions at the swimming championships, to be held in Timaru at the end of tho month.
