Gisborne

(From our own correspondent.) December 28. Midnight Mass was celebrated at St. Mary’s Church at Christmas. Despite the boisterous night the church was filled with worshippers, mostly all receiving Holy Communion. Rev. Father Lane was celebrant, and St. Mary’s Choir gave a fine rendition of Farmer’s Mass in B Flat. Father Lane gave a short but eloquent address on the ideals of Christmas. The success of the St. Mary’s School during the past year drew from Father Lane (on a recent Sunday) an eloquent tribute to the excellent work of®the good Sisters in charge of the schools. ; The Hawke’s Bay Education Board Inspectors gave an excellent report of the schools. ' '/ Masters Francis Sexton, and; Eric Lander were successful in securing the St. Patrick’s College (Wellington) and Sacred Heart College (Auckland) Scholarships respectively. Considering the extreme youth of the winners, their, success is a matter of all-round congratulation in the parish. It is stated that Rev. Father O’Dougherty will be stationed here as curate to Rev. Father Lane. , • , .■ y - >. ■ £
