- MRS; ARABELLA HAILES, BALFOUR, SOUTHLAND. -;■;• There died on Noveember; 16, at Melbourne Road, Is- ' land Bay, "Wellington, Mrs. Arabella Hailes, fourth daughter of: the late Francis Dunn (Audit Department, Welling--0 ton) and relict of Walter Mary Hailes, Balfour, Southland. ' The deceased had been to Auckland, and on her way back ■remained in Wellington for medical attention, as her health had not been satisfactory for some time, but the best medical skill was unavailing in staying the hand of death, and she died: peacefully, surrounded by her relatives and fortified by the rites of Holy Church, of which she was. always a true daughter. Mrs. Hailes was well known for her cliari- , ties, in Southland, where she was held in the highest esteem by all. Requiem Mass was celebrated for the repose ,of her soul, at St. Francis's Church, Island Bay, and the funeral took place at Karori. Father Mark Devoy, who attended her during her illness, officiated at the funeral. Deceased leaves three step-children (two sons and' adaugh-; ter), three sisters, and a brother to mourn their loss.—R.l.P.! -MRS. ALICE COLLINS, WESTPORT. \ There passed away at Westport recently'another of the! noble band of pioneers of the early 'sixties, in the person; of Mrs. Collins, for many years well and favorably, .known in the Charleston district. Almost the whole of "her mar-; ried life was spent in Charleston, where she 'was recognised! as a ministering angel. There was never a case of sickness: - or distress unattended by her kindly sympathy, and many a deathbed saw her there to the end, assisting the departing soul, and doing all in her power to help and succor the grief-stricken relatives. Her husband predeceased her some seven years ago, and her only son, James, lost his life in the ill-fated steamer Penguin, which was wrecked . hear Wellington "about ten years ago. Mesdames Hiclcey and Derham, of Auckland, and McCarthy, of Ohakune, are the only surviving daughters. Deceased was buried in the Catholic cemetery at Charleston, in the shadow of the. church where she had worshipped for so many years.— R.I.P. . , '*'■■' i MRS. ELLEN MAKER, WELLINGTON. Another pioneer Catholic of the Dominion, in the perv son of Mrs. Ellen Maher, wife of Mr. Denis Maker, of Rintoul Street, Wellington South, passed away on November 16, after a long and painful illness borne with true Christian patience and fortitude. Born in Co. Kilkenny, ,; Ireland, in 1847, the late Mrs. Maher, with her brother, James Walsh, arrived on the West Coast 53 years ago. A woman of great faith and charity, the welfare of the Church (which mourns the loss of a generous and devoted daughter) - was to her of prime importance. She was attended during most of her illness by Very Rev. Dean McKenna, and during her last days by Rev. Father Fallon. .. -Requiem Mass for the repose of her soul. was celebrated by Ven. Archdeacon Devoy, S.M. (an old friend of the family) and was followed in the afternoon by the funeral, which was a, very large and representative one. Rev. Father Mark Devoy, S.M., assisted by Fathers Segrief, S.M., and ,' Walsh, officiated at the interment. The deceased•-leaves her husband, two sons, and four daughters to mourn their loss.— . MR. MAURICE O'CONNOR, TIMARU. ,-;:, After a brief illness, the death occurred at Timaru on November 1 of Maurice O'Connor, a. -well-known- and re- . ; spected : resident of South Canterbury, at the age of 63 :; years. The late Mr. O'Connor, who was born in Co. Kerry, :£ Ireland,. came to New Zealand in the ship Hereford in 1879, and shortly after took up land at Hazelburn, where 1 . he resided till the time of his death.
