Catholics and Protestants Fight Bigotry FAILURE OF THIRD ATTACK ON SCHOOLS. Promoters of the propaganda to abolish parochial schools in the State of Michigan, U.S.A., by a constitutional amendment have failed to obtain, the requisite number of signatures to the petition for submission of the measure at the next general election, November 7, 1922. The proposition will, therefore, be excluded from the ballot. This is the third defeat that this proposal, backed by anti-Catholio bigots, has suffered. Protestants as well as Catholics have waged a vigorous campaign of education among the people of Michigan to bring home to them the injustice of the attack on the private schools of the State, and to make them understand the heavy burden of taxation the abolition of these institutions would impose on the taxpayers. All the Catholic Bishops of Michigan have co-operated with one another and with representatives of various Protestant denominations in the fight against the professional bigots, who have made the war on religious schools a profitable business for the last three years. Fight Starts in Oregon. With the object of appealing to the sense of justice of the people of Oregon, the Catholics of the State, under the leadership of Dr. Alexander Christie, Archbishop of Oregon City, have begun a campaign to save their schools from destruction at the hands of bigots who are pressing the adoption of a law compelling all children between the ages of eight and sixteen to attend public schools. Organisation of committees in every political division of the State has been undertaken, and plans for co-operat-ing with other denominations 'whose interests are affected by the proposed legislation are being formulated. Already the Lutherans and Seventh Day Adventists, both of which conduct private schools, have indicated their intention to combat the measure. The Catholics contemplate forming joint committees, upon which will be represented Protestant churches opposed to the closing of private schools.
