Ashburton
(From our own correspondent.) October 8. The fortnightly meeting of the local branch, of the Hibernian Society was held last Monday evening, the president (Bro. W. Bryant) presiding over a good attendance of members. One new member was initiated. The delegates to the Friendly Society’s Council reported on the recent meeting, and a lengthy discussion followed on the business thereat transacted. On the report of the sick-visitors, sick pay amounting to £7 was passed for payment. After the business of the evening had been transacted a social hour was spent. The weekly meeting on last Wendnesday evening of the Ashburton Catholic Club, presided over by the president (Mr. L. T. J. Ryan) was exceptionally well attended. The programme was an “Editor’s Box”; among the questions were: “Would you support your country right or wrong?” ; “Would the advent to power of a Labor Government be in the best interests of New Zealand?”; “Do you consider the Arbitration Court as at present constituted, is in the best interests of the country?” These three questions in particular formed the subjects of a good debate. The newly-elected executive met on Thursday evening, and arranged interesting programmes for October meetings.
