TESTIMONIAL TO RIGHT BEY. DR. LISTON A committee has been formed in Auckland with the object of affording the Catholic people of New Zealand an opportunity to present to Bishop Liston a testimonial which shall be a tangible mark of their resentment of the bigoted attack recently made on him and at the same time a token of their joy in his victory over the enemies of our Holy Church. The prosecution of the Bishop was not a mere personal episode. It affected every Catholic in the Dominion. It was directed against us through him: it was a plot to discredit the Church. In the same way *the Bishop’s triumph was a matter that concerned us all, one in which we ought all rejoice. Hence it is deemed fitting to give the Catholic people an opportunity of participating in a New Zealand Catholic Testimonial which will not only celebrate the victory but also show our enemies that every attack made on us through our bishops and priests and nuns will always find us solidly united in defence of our rights. The Testimonial will also serve as a fund to pay the expenses incurred on account of the foolish prosecution which was brought on as a result of the ignoble tactics of the daily papers which without any evidence set themselves to fan into flame the latent hatred of Catholics throughout the Dominion. Donations may be forwarded to the members of the Auckland Committee, who are: Right Rev. Mgr. Hackett, Ellerslie, Chairman. Mr. J. J. O’Brien, Treasurer. Mr. J. Coleman 1 Very Rev. H. Holbrook, Grey Lynn ) becr etanes. Secretaries.
