Timaru

(From our own correspondent.) March 27. A very interesting and instructive address on Irish affairs was given by the Very Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M., in St. Ratrick’s Hall on 22nd inst. The Rev. Father Harley, S.M., presided over a large attendance of parishioners and well-wishers. The Rev. Fathers O’Ferrall and O’Leary were also present. It will he remembered that the Dean accompanied Dean Holley (Provincial of the Marist Order in New Zealand) to Europe last May, and the former had charge of the amount collected by the Self-Determination for Ireland League in Timaru and district, and had the great, pleasure of handing a cheque for over £SOO to Mr. de Valera, who was very grateful for the money subscribed by generous supporters in South Canterbury towards the great cause. The Dean held the close attention of the audience for nearly two hours, and gave a brief account of a. number of notable men he met in Ireland and England, including “Mike” Collins, Duffy, Childers, etc. During an interval songs were capably rendered by Father O’Leary and Mrs. Lynch. Mrs. Mangos accompanied the singers and also played some Irish airs. At the close of the address Mr. John O’Leary (president of the local league), in a good speech, moved a very hearty vote of thanks to Dean Regnault, and Mr. Wm. Cunningham ably seconded the vote, which was carried with great enthusiasm. The mission conducted by Fathers O’Leary and Vincent, S.M., for the children of the parish, which commenced in the Sacred Heart Church last Wednesday, concluded on Sunday afternoon, when the church was well filled with juveniles, who received the Papal blessing. The sacred edifice was crowded on Sunday night, when Father O’Leary preached a powerful sermon on “What does it profit a man,” etc. The Rev. Father McCarthy is expected to assist this week.
