ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON

(From our own correspondent.) March 10. A very successful bazaar was held in St. Patrick’s School, Kilbirnie, last week. Rev. Father Connolly and his parishioners are to be congratulated on the successful result of their efforts. His Grace Archbishop O’Shea duly installed the Rev. Father Griffin as parish priest in the newly-formed parish of Johnsonville on last Sunday week. Mr. T. J. McCosker, who has been in the Government Architect’s branch for the past 25 years, retires at the end of the present month on superannuation, A very successful euchre party for the St. Joseph’s Bazaar was held in the Federation Rooms last Tuesday evening. The annual general Communion of the members of the Hibernian Society will take place at St. Mary’s, Boulcott Street, on next Sunday at the 8 a.m. Mass. After Msas the annual breakfast will take place at the Marble Bar, Manners Street. A pleasant time was spent on Wednesday night last at St. Joseph’s Hall, Buckle Street, when the men of the Sacred Heart Society gave a social evening after the meeting. The event took the form of a concert, and the largo attendance . and enthusiasm displayed showed that the members present fully appreciated the efforts of those responsible for the evening’s success. The following contributed to the evening’s amusement:—Messrs. L. Hanlon, Rubick, F. Dwan, O’Kane, Chisholm, Kelly, Whittaker, J.-Hyland, L. Jansen, W. Gamble (jun, and sen.), and R. S. Dwyer. At the conclusion, the Rev. Father O’Donnell thanked those who contributed items, and also those who were responsible for the evening’s entertainment. A very pleasant garden party was held on Saturday afternoon in the beautiful grounds of Nai Nai, attached to the Catholic Boys’ Orphanage, in aid of the funds of that institution, which is under the care of the Sisters of Mercy. The grounds are looking at their best, and the visitors, who were present in large numbers, expressed great pleasure at the splendid appearance they presented. Among the attractions provided were boating on the river and various sideshows. Excellent music was provided by the Lower Hutt Band, and afternoon tea was much enjoyed. Many kindly-disposed friends of the institution had donated liberal quantities of flowers, fruit, and vegetables, and these subsequently realised a substantial sum.

NEW CATHOLIC CATHEDRAL; SUM OF £IOO,OOO REQUIRED. In replying to a gathering which bade him farewell prior to his departure on a visit to Rome, Archbishop O’Shea stated that he expected to have a strenuous time when he returned, because it had been decided to proceed with the erection of a portion of the new Cathedral, which would be on the St. Patrick’s College site. The sum of £IOO,OOO would be required for this purpose, and each parish would be required to contribute its quota. They had not pushed the campaign for the Cathedral fund in the past owing to other necessary works taking priority, such as schools; but now he was happy to say that the Wellington Archdiocese was splendidly equipped with up-to-date schools, which left them free now to raise a building worthy of the Empire City. It was their aim to lay the foundation-stone on March 17, 1924, which would be the 50th anniversary of the consecration of their revered Archbishop and Metropolitan, Archbishop Redwood.
