Schoolday Memories, by Mary Catherine Goulter. Burns,

Oates, Washbourne, London; 1/6. % Mrs. Goulter needs no introduction to New Zealand

readers, and to some of the friends of the Tablet her reputation is well known. The chapters of the little book she now gives us appeared from time to time in The Month (Auckland), and, we are told by its editor, were much appreciated by supporters of that periodical. We admire his judgment in urging her to publish her sketches in their present form. Schoolday Memories is a sweet, wholesome collection of very sound and wise thoughts about Lehrejaihren in a convent school. In admirable order, and in refined language, the Memories give us edifying and sympathetic pictures of a girl's experiences of training by Catholic nuns —by the Dominicans, in Mrs. Goulter's case, we should surmise. Besides its intrinsic value we welcome it as a scholarly tribute to a great teaching Order from a pupil whose culture is in itself a testimonial to the worth of her old teachers.

The Spiritual.Life:.Treatises on the Inner Life by Elizabeth

Leseur (from the French), with an introductory letter from Cardinal Amette. Burns, Oates, Wash-

bourne, London; 6s net.

Cardinal Amette tells us that this book is distinguished for elegance of style, accuracy of doctrine, a perception of what one. who has received much owes to others, an ardent thirst for the salvation of souls. He finds in the following words, of Madame Leseur a true portrait of herself: "We have all met persons of this. sort. They are rare, no doubt, but there flows from them such an intensity of life, such calm strength, and such true beauty, That merely to come in contact with them soothes and comforts us." The. long introduction written by her husband, who found faith through Elizabeth's prayers,' is an intensely interesting document.
