Obituary
MR. DANIEL MAHER, RAMA RAMA. Ihe death of Mr, Daniel Maher occurred at the residence of his nephew, Mr. D. Lynch, Rama Rama, on November 9 (says the Franklin Times). It is about 52 years since Mr. Maher arrived in Auckland from Templemore, Tipperary, Ireland, and with the rush, went to the Thames goldfields, where ho resided for some time, leaving there tor Wellington, and then coming to Rama Rama where he has been a well-known landmark for the last 45 years. One of the early pioneers, he was instrumental in building the first Catholic church in Rama Rama (or, as it was then called, Maketu), the church being a nikau one, then fol lowed by a wooden structure in late years, being later again superseded by the picturesque building now nestling on the side of the hill. The deceased took a keen interest in the church and its welfare, and it was largely due to his efforts that -from being a shell the church has been lined and finished off. The Catholic hall has also been one of his cares up to within the last year or so. The funeral, which was very largely attended, took place at the Catholic cemetery, when Rev. Father Molloy officiated, and gave a very feeling address, dwelling on the high esteem in which deceased was held by all who knew him. His familiar figure will be greatly missed in the district. The late Mr. Maher is survived by one unmarried sister; other sisters were the late Mrs. Brophy and Mrs. Lynch (Auckland) and Mrs Fleming (Christchurch).— R.I.P. MRS. CATHERINE LYONS, REWETI.
