MR, PATRICK McAVINUE, HASTINGS. The death occurred on the 11th inst.,. at Hastings, ' Hawke’s Bay, of Mr. Patrick McAvinue, who passed away after a brief illness, fortified by the rites of Holy Church. The deceased was a native of Co. Fermanagh, Ireland, and came to New Zealand 40 years ago. He resided in Canterbury for over 20 years, then at Palmerston North, and latterly at Hastings. His widow, six sons, and one daughter are left to mourn their loss.— MR. TIMOTHY D. CREEDON, AUCKLAND. With regret (writes our own correspondent) the death is recorded of Mr. Timothy D. Creedon, .who was born at Mill Street, Co. Cork, Ireland, on July 5, 1872, and cam© to New Zealand 27 years ago. He began work in the Hawke’s Bay district, where he lived for a long time, and became popular and well-known. Later on he moved to Wellington, where he joined the prison ■warders, and had about 20 years’ service, being principal warder at the time of his death. In 1914 he moved to Auckland, where he resided in the Mt. Eden' District.' He will be sadly missed in St. Benedict’s Church and Convent, where he worked for the last six years. He was an ardent worker in the St. Vincent de Paul Society, and in all good works connected with our holy faith. His widow and family have the heartfelt sympathy of a large circle of friends.—R.l.P. Petone Convent School The convent school of the Sisters of the Missions, Petone, “broke-up” for the Christmas holidays on Friday, December 16,. after a most successful year’s work. All the pupils presented for the Trinity College musical examinations passed, the results being as follows:Associate A.T.C.L. 1; higher local 1; senior 1; intermediate honors 1, pass 1; (violin) pass 1; junior honors 4, pass 4, (violin) pass 1; preparatory honors 2; first steps 1. W At the recent standard VI. examination the Sisters presented ten candidates, and ten secured proficiency certificates as follows: —Maggie Gaynor, Maggie Keating, Irene Maloney, Emma McGill, Claude Collett, T. Parsons, Ray Anderson, W. Raper, K. Collett, and John Hill. T. Parsons and Ray Anderson were also successful in winning scholarships for St. Patrick’s College, Wellington. The gold medal presented by Rev. Father Quealy for the dux of the school, was won by Claude Collett, and at the recent “Times” essay competitions, Claude Collett secured the first prize (two guineas),

Sacred Heart School,’ North-east Valley, Dunedin

There was a large attendance of parents and friends at the “breaking-up” ceremony of the Sacred Heart, school, North-east Valley. His Lordship Dr. Whyte, Bishop of Dunedin, presided, and there were also present the Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., and the Rev. Father Kavaney. The children provided a charming little programme in which they acquitted themselves with credit.
