Our Sports Summary

* HOLY CROSS COLLEGE, MOSGIEL. On the 26th ult. the students of Holy Cross College held their 21st annual sports in the Mosgiel Recreation Grounds. The track was in excellent condition, and the„weather ■ ideal except for a strong head ind which militated against fast times. The professorial staff were present, as were also many friends and -pupils of the college. The college senior championship provided a stirring encounter, the issue being doubtful right up to the finishing post. The winner, M. Darby, ran a well-judged race. The junior championship also was closely contested, the winner being W. Herlihy. The medal for the highest aggregate of points in the junior events was awarded to J. Murphy. As the Sacred Heart College boys are busily engaged with their annual examinations- only one cricket match was played last week, which by the way is the final match of 1921. Again the keenness of the boys avrs rewarded by a very creditable win over Ponsonby in the second grade Auckland Association games. Ponsonby in their first innings made 146 and in their second smack lost eight , wickets for 72. Bowling for S.H.C. in the second innings

(the first innings was recorded last week), Kalaugher took ■ three wickets for 24, O’Regan one for eight, O’Connor one for 10, and Griffin wife for 14. The, college boys batted well, thus scoring 230 for the loss of six wickets. Kalaugher and R. O’Connor made 46 each, McMahon 45, Lander 41 and Griffin 17 not out. Half a dozen delays caused by rain robbed . the college team of their good chance of a three-point victory. * At the Labor Day sports in-open competition S.H.C. athletes did well. W. Kalaugher won the high jump handicap off scratch by clearing sft 2in; E. Reid threw the cricket ball against a heavy wind 98 yards 7 inches, thus winning first place; E. Griffin was second with a throw of 89 yards. R. Lander off 20yds won the 440yds flat handicap in 52secs dead ; he also did remarkably well in the 440yds hurdles, for from the 10yds mark he won in the excellent time of GOsecs dead. The handball competitions drew big entries. After six weeks the various events have just been concluded The winners are; — Senior championship —W. Kalaugher -defeated T, Molloy; junior championship —W. Levin defeated B. Kearney; senior handicap — O’Connor defeated T. Molloy; junior handicap —W. Levin defeated A. Carew; class championship was won by the Fifth and the form championship by the Sixth, DUNEDIN, The Christian Brothers’ School has entered three cricket teams in the local schools’ competitionsone in the primary division and two in the secondary division. The results so far are: —Primary team, played 5, won 3; secondary A team, played 6, won 5. The A’s played High School on Saturday last and won easily. High School made 27 and the A’s replied with 190 for six wickets (T. Carter 117, retired). Secondary B, played 6, on 4. At the Caledonian Sports held at the Caledonian ground on Saturday, November 26, the Christian Brothers’ School did well, just losing the secondary schools’ shield to Waitaki; the points being Waitaki 10, Christian Brothers 10. The following successes came to the school B. Finlayson (under 14) Ist in 100yds schools’ championship, 2nd in 220yds schools’championship, 2nd in long jump schools’ championship P. Williams (under 14) 2nd in 100yds championship, 2nd in high jump, 2nd in 440yds; P. McClintoch (secondary schools’) 2nd in high jump (4ft 9in); M. Williams (secondary schools) 2nd in high jump (4ft 9in), 2nd in 440yds, 3rd in £-mile scratch; C. McCaughan (secondary schools) Ist in 220yds. The secondary schools’ relay race was Avon by the school, the winning team being C. McCaughan, M. Williams, R. McClintoch, and B. Burrell.
