Greymouth
In anticipation of the election of office-bearers for tho ensuing six months, there was an unusually large attendance of members of St. Patrick’s branch (No. 17) at the last meeting, at which Bro. T. Beirne presided (writes a con espondent). It was noteworthy that several pioneer members were in attendance, as were also many newlyelected members. With the exception of Bro. J. Kennedy (president-elect), for whose absence owing to illness an apology was received, all office-bearers were present. The election, in which keen interest was manifested, resulted as follows; —President, Bro. J. Kennedy; vicepresident, Bro. E. King; treasurer, Bro. J. Collogan; warden, Bro. R. Sweetman; guardian, Bro. H. Affleck; sick visitors, Bros. P. Dwyer and T. Beirne; auditors, Bros. M. J. Fogarty and P. Blanchfield; medical attendant, Dr. J. Wilson Mcßrearty; dispensing chemist, Mr. Hanwell Williams; trustees, Bros. M. Quinlan, W. Sullivan, and D. Shannahan. Two notices of motion“that the permanent secretary’s salary be increased,” and “that in future the two sick visitors be granted honoraria”were considered and in both instances carried. The receipts for the evening constituted a record, and, with an increased membership, together with an improved financial status, the Greymouth branch will soon occupy a foremost position in the society. The secretary reported that sickness and distress were less evident than in previous terms. The members wore urged to patronise the parochial concert to be held in the Town Hall on Thursday, July 14. A successful meeting was concluded by the passing of a vote of thanks to retiring office-bearers. Rev. Father McDonnell, S.M., Procurator .of St. Patrick’s College, is at present on a holiday visit to his mother in Greyraouth. The Sisters of Mercy, aided by many ladies of the parish, are promoting various entertainments to augment the funds already in hand to erect a new convent worthy of the best traditions of the West Coast. A concert is being organised to supplement the parish funds. The best available talent on the Coast, as well as two Christchurch artists, are to contribute to the programme. Mr. H. P. Giffney is lion, secretary to a strong and enthusiastic committee. The Hibernian Society intends to promote a function at a later date in aid of the same object.
