ASHBURTON CATHOLIC CLUB.
A very enjoyable smoke concert was held on Wednesday evening last in the club rooms, Havelock Street (writes a correspondent under date June 22). There was a large attendance of members and friends, and the gathering was presided over by Mr, T. M. Brophy. Several ‘ toasts were honored, and the following contributed musical items: Messrs. L. M. Espagne, A. McDonald, V. Cullen, T. Fitzgerald, W. Minihan, J. Meeking, and T. M. Brophy. This (Wednesday) evening an inter-club debate will take place between the Celtic Club and the Catholic Literary Society. The subject is “Should compulsory military training be abolished?” Great interest is being taken and a record attendance is anticipated. ’
