Otahuhu
There was a large gathering at the Otahuhu Public Hall on Monday' evening, the 18th inst., on the occasion of a farewell and presentation to Rev. ’Father Murphy, who is leaving the parish to take up duties in the newlyformed Good Shepherd parish (writes a correspondent). Amongst those on the platform were Father Murphy’s successor (Rev. Father Carran), Very Rev. Dean Cahill, Very Rev. Chancellor Holbrook, and Fathers O’Malley, O’Byrne, and Murphy (St. Benedict’s). Mr. T. M. O’Connell presided, and on behalf of the members of the parish presented Father Murphy with a cheque which is understood to represent quite a substantial amount. ,The chairman paid a glowing tribute to the work performed in the parish by Father Murphy, and wished him success in his new and - heavier charge. Messrs. J. E. Gillies and J. M. O’Connell : also spoke in eulogistic terms of the departing priest. , Father Murphy, feelingly replied, saying he hoped that he would often visit Otahuhu and spend there days as happy as those of his three years’ ministry in the parish. Advantage was taken of the occasion to extend a cordial welcome to Rev. Father Carran, who suitably replied. Very Rev. Dean Cahill and Very Rev. Chancellor Holbrook also spoke, i During the evening an enjoyable musical programme was rendered. A tennis tournament was held last week-end between the four Catholic tennis clubs in the - city , and suburban parishes. All the clubs were strongly represented, and some good matches were .witnessed. The Otahuhu club, by winning three finals, was-at the head of the winning list and St. Benedict’s, with ij one win, was second. The final , of the men’s doubles between Otahuhu and Ponsonby was abandoned owing -to darkness when the games were 4to . 3 in favor of Otahuhu. f /The J results V were, as: follows: ILadies’ singles— C.
