Te Kuiti
(From our own correspondent.) January 14. This progressive town, with its population of about 2500, has not, so far, enjoyed the inestimable privilege of having a community of religious teachers established within its borders. The main difficulty heretofore has been the heavy church debt. Thanks, however, to our energetic pastor’s efforts some of the disadvantages under which we have for long been laboring are now being removed, and we are assured that before the end of the present year the muchdesired convent will be completed and our Catholic school opened. < The recent queen carnival in connection with a bazaar • passed off successfully. The country queen candidate (Mrs. E. Ryan) was elected, while the Maori candidate (Miss. Lorna Kawa) was a very close second. The net proceeds of the carnival were £517, 25 per cent, of which amount went to the Te Kuiti Hospital fund. The bazaar, which lasted for four nights, resulted in a net balance of £382, which must be considered satisfactory. Following were the stallholders: Plain Stall—Mesdames Sheehan and Shields-Hogan, and Miss Sheehan; fancy stall—Mesdames Kerr and Greaney; sweets stall—Mesdames Spring and Moore, and Miss Lawson; produce stall—Messrs. R. Cotter and Ferguson; soft drinks stall—Miss V. Stewart; refreshment stall—Mrs. and the Misses Park. Rev. Father O’Flynn and his energetic committee, with Mr.
Shields-Hogan as, secretary, deserve to be congratulated oil the success which has crowned their efforts in the interests of the laudable object in view. Mr. John Walsh, one of our parishioners,, well deserves also to be commended for his efforts; in personally collecting the fine sum of £230 by voluntary subscription just prior to the starting, of. the queen carnival competition. This makes a total sum of, £IOOO raised here during the past six months*for Church purposes.
