SACRED HEART GIRLS’ COLLEGE, CHRISTCHURCH.

The prizes won by pupils of the Sacred Heart Girls’ College, Christchurch, conducted by the Sisters of Notre Dame des Missions, were distributed on Wednesday, December 15 in the schoolroom, Lower High street, by the Right Rev. Mgr. McKenna, of Wellington, assisted by the Very Rev. Dr Kennedy, Adm., in the absence of his Lordship Bishop Brodie. J • In.the commercial class, Eunice James and Annie Consedine, who sat for the Public Service Examination for shorthand and typewriting, came high on the list of successful candidates. In connection with the Incorporated Phonographic Society’s typewriting examination, 15 of the pupils gained junior and three gained intermediate certificates. All the pupils presented for shorthand examinations were successful in gaining certificates from Sir Isaac Pitman and Sons, London. The secondary classes were examined in February by Mr Parr (of the Education Department), who approved the new science room and reported very favourably on the work of the school. In September, the, primary division of the school was examined by Mr Brock, the Senior Inspector of Canterbury, who reported that the school made a very creditable appearance and gave evidence of efficient instruction. The written answers were models of neatness; order and discipline were very good, and the pupils were polite and well-behaved. At the music examinations held during the year in connection with Trinity College of Music and the Royal College of Music, 70 candidates were successful, several obtaining honors. The gold medal, awarded by the ' Christchurch centre for senior division of _ Trinity College, was won by Madge O’Malley. An exhibition, tenable for three years at the Royal College of Music, London, was awarded to Kitty Murphy on the recommendation of the examiner. At the Musical and Elocutionary Competitions held both in Christchurch and Wellington, several first, second and third prizes were won by the pupils.
