ARCHDIOCESE OF WELLINGTON (From our own correspondent.) July 3. His Grace Archbishop O’Shea returned last week from Samoa. Rev. Father Fitzgibbon, of St. Anne’s, Newtown, has been appointed to Levin parish. Mr. E. W. Kane, who is a parishioner of Thorndon, has been appointed Clerk of Parliament. Rev. Father Gondringer, S.M., M.A., of St. Patrick’s College, preached at St. Francis’s Church, Island Bay, last Sunday. The Seatoun stall committee in connection with the St. Joseph’s Orphanage Bazaar, will hold a sale of work at the Upper Hutt on July 17. Rev. Father Michael Murphy, S.M., of San Francisco, is in Wellington on a holiday visit. He proposes also visiting Blenheim, Nelson, and Grey mouth. Rev. Father Eccleton, Marist Missioner, celebrated the last Mass at St. Anne’s Church last Sunday, and also preached impressive sermons both morning and evening. Mr. George McNamara, formerly of Invercargill, has been appointed assistant secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department. Mr. McNamara is a parishioner of Thorndon.

Nurse Garven, an Irish singer, gave two very successful concerts here during the week. She is being trained by Mrs. Mead, of Christchurch. The press notices concerning her performances were very flattering. On Sunday, July 11, his Graco Archbishop O'Shea will bless and open the new school of St. Catherine's, Upper Bourke Street, Kilbirnie, which has just been erected to the memory of the late Sister M. Chanel, tho first Superioress of St. Catherine's Convent.

The final meeting of the Thomas Moore Anniversary Musical Festival Committee was held last Wednesday evening, Mr. J. P. McGowan presiding. Notwithstanding the boisterous weather on the night of the concert tho financial result was most satisfactory, the net receipts amounting to £4O. Votes of thanks were accorded the performers, officials, and committee for their services. The question of organising a concert at a later date for the Catholic Women's Hostel was also considered and favorably received. The syllabus for the 1920 competitions was approved, and will soon be circulated.

The Hutt branch of the H.A.C.B. Society met last evening at the Catholic Schoolroom, Lower Hutt. Bro. W. Gleeson presided. After general business had been transacted, officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—President, Bro. Treahy; vice-president, Bro. S. E. Santa Maria; secretary, Bro. Morgan; treasurer, Bro. P. Evans; auditors, Bros. Santa Maria and W. Gleeson jun.; guardian, Bro Power; warden, Bro. McCormick, trustee, Bro. T. Moroney; sick visitors, Bros. Evans and Pearto. The installation of the individual officers was carried out by Bro. A. W. Best, P.P. '■. The quarterly meeting of the ladies' branch of the Hibernian Society took place at St. Mary's Social Hall last evening, Miss Kathleen Griffin presiding over a largo attendance of members. After the routine business had been disposed of, the ladies elected and installed Mrs. P. D. Hoskins as a life honorary member of the society The remainder of the evening was spent sociallv, and proved most enjoyable. The following contributed items :—Misses Lyons, Warren, Cookson, Quinn, Casey, and Doris Hoskins, _ Messrs. L. Dew, James Clark, P. Sherlock J E Carmine and J. D. McPhee. Several new members were nominated. The numerical as well as the financial strength of the branch is rapidly increasing. The officers of the society are: Miss Kathleen Griffin, president Miss Una Bezar vice-president; Miss Blanche Craig, secretary; and Miss N. McCarthy, treasurer. ' '
