Hokitika

(From our own correspondent.) Juno 4. On Monday evening last, a large number of the parishioners met in the Catholic club rooms to bid farewell to the Very Rev. Dean Tubman, S.M., who is about to take a trip home to Ireland and the Continent. Mr. P. J. McCarthy referred to the good work of the Very Rev. Dean, and said that although he had only been in Hokitika for about four or five months, he had won the hearts of his people by his kindly and cheerful disposition. Mr. J. P. Ward endorsed the remarks of the previous speaker, and wished Dean Tubman bon voi/aije and the best of health. Mrs. W. Keller then, on behalf of the parishioners, presented the Dean with a small token of the esteem and respect in which the parishioners regarded him. In reply Dean Tubman sincerely thanked the people for their very kind gift and promised to remember them always in his prayers and while offering Masfe in distant lands. In referring to his trip to Ireland, he expressed the hope that in the very near future Ireland would obtain her just rights, and that the present tyrannical persecution would soon cease. Ho wished his parishioners God’s blessing and bade them all, collectively and individually, good-bye. On Thursday afternoon, the 3rd inst., the Mayor (Air. Perry) opened the Hokitika Catholic bazaar in the presence of a very large gathering. His Worship said that it gave him great pleasure to open the bazaar, and he wished the promoters every success. The parishioners feel confident that the bazaar will bo a success, and hope to bo able to liquidate, if not the whole, at least the greater part of the church debt. The members of the various committees have been working strenuously, and are to be congratulated on the manner in which they have performed their various tasks. Rev. Father O’Sullivan, S.M., arrived during the week from Upper Hutt to take over the duties of parish priest, and already is showing great interest in the affairs of the parish.
