CHRISTIAN BROTHERS’ NEW RESIDENCE

CARNIVAL NOTES. Tho members and friends of the Hibernian Society in Dunedin and suburbs appeal for assistance to make their stall the huge success it is hoped to prove. Donations of whatever kind may be left at Mr. J. .1. Marlow’s furniture warehouse, Princes Street, and will be gratefully acknowledged. •4 The Sacred Heart Schoolroom, North-cast Valley, presented a busy scene on last Thursday evening, when over twenty ladies occupied themselves in sewing and making up suitable articles wherewith to furnish their stall. Much enthusiasm is being shown generally in the Valley in connection with the event. . ■ At a recent meeting of the lady supporters of the C.B. Old Boys’ Stall, it was unanimously decided to place the charge of the stall in tho hands of Mesdames Duffy, Dunn, and Airey. A meeting of ladies will be held this (Thursday) evening to further matters in connection with the old boys’ efforts. ' *. ■

Coming events include a high-class concert in His Majesty’s Theatre on Monday evening, November 24, now being promoted by the Hibernians of Dunedin. r A “gift” musical evening in the interests of the North-east Valley Stall will be held on Monday evening, November 17/ in the local Sacred Heart Schoolroom; and a children’s concert will be given in St. Joseph’s Hall on Wednesday evening, November 26, in aid of the Mornington- Stall.'

The Catholic people of Kaikorai have decided to join forces with those of Mornington in conducting a stall in connection with the carnival, and a meeting is to be held in the local school-church on next Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock to devise the best means to bo adopted to assist

in a combined-effort., A large attendance is urgently requested. Already a considerable amount of interest is being manifested in the movement among the people.,, of ,Kai-’ korai, and 1 a; good measure of success is anticipated. Miss Mary Brennan has been elected the Refreshment Stall Queen (“New Zealand’s Queen”). “ The stallholders are holding a dance and “500” evening at the. residence of Mrs. W. Shiel, Forbury Road, on Saturday evening next, which should prove a great success. The ladies of the congregation of St. Francis Xavier’s Church, Mornington, met recently to organise a "stall.' l Mesdames A. H. Stone; ■and-RPC^lin^hd r Miss H. Miss Cissie Mackenzie (designated the Scottish Queen) has L./ been elected queen candidate for Mornington.v.. ; ~ CONCERT AT NORTH-EAST VALLEY. In aid of the North-East Valley Stall (queen candidate, .■ Miss D. Bunbury) an excellently-arranged concert was enjoyed by a large and appreciative audience in the local ; ;,S Sacred Heart Schoolroom on last Wednesday evening week. The following programme was presented, and met with such acceptance that recalls, were general;Flute quartet, North-East \ alley Band ■ (Air. W. Colbert, conductor);' songs, Misses J. C. King, C. Anderson, and M. C. Dillon, Messrs. J. McNisli, Angell, and H. Poppelwell; recitations, Miss M. McCleary, Messrs. J. Laurenson and C. Wilson. A fine exhibition , of club swinging was given by a squad of pupils of the Christian Brothers’ School; the little Misses ' Rice very prettily performed a piano duet; and Messrs, MacDonald and Smith, of the Dunedin Pipe Band, gave, in fine style, a much appreciated selection. In a bell and xylophone solo Master L. Simpson displayed much artistic skill, and his performance was well received. Another popular number was a brilliantly played piano solo by Miss D. Hudson, this young lady being also accompanist of the evening with one exception, when Miss M. Brunton officiated in that capacity. The National Anthem closed an entertainment which reflected credit on the promoters and their secretary (Mr. J. Matheson). C.B. OLD BOYS’ ENTERTAINMENT. On last Thursday evening the “Old Boys” of the Christian Brothers’ School (queen candidate, Miss E. Hart) gave an entertainment in the Assembly Hall of the school, and were rewarded by a fairly numerous audience. A really, good programme was presented, the various numbers beings so well received that practically each had to be repeated. The following contributed:—Piano duet, Misses G. Wilson. , and M. Sandys; violin solos, Mr. R. Kitchen; recitations, Masters F. Foster and B. Lynskey; songs, Misses M. O. Dillon, M. Carter, A. McCready, and M. Goughian, Messrs. D. Fogarty and Murphy., In song and story Mr. J. Deaker well maintained his reputation as a popular entertainer. An exhibition of club swinging by several Christian Brothers’ School boys, and Scottish dancing in national costume by Master C. Wilson, were much appreciated items. Miss Clara Hughes played the accompaniments in her usual efficient style. Addressing the audience at the close of the programme, Rev. Brother Bowler thanked, on behalf of the “Old Boys,” those present for their patronage and . .. incidental helpfulness towards the object for which the en- , tertainment was promoted. He expressed his (pleasure, and that of the other Brothers of the teaching staff, at the fact that the first entertainment to bo given in the fine As- t , sembly Hall in which they were then gathered should be in connection with tho cause, of Catholic education in Dun- .Vi edin, and ho hoped that the function under notice would bo the forerunner of many similar successful gatherings. Brother Bowler particularly thanked all who had contributed to the very enjoyable programme of the evening.
