The ordinary monthly meeting of St. Joseph’s Cathedral parish committee of the Catholic Federation was held on Sunday evening after devotions. The Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., presided, and routine business was transacted.
The Marist Missioners, Rev. Fathers Ainsworth and O’Leary, will commence a mission at the Church of St. Mary, Star of the Sea, Port Chalmers, on next Sunday. Missions will afterwards be conducted in the outlying districts of the parish. ’ f -' : '
Large congregations attended the Masses celebrated on Saturday last (Feast of All Saints) at St. Joseph’s Cathedral, and suburban churches of the parish—Northeast Valley, Jvaikorai, and Mornington.
There was Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament from; the eleven o’clock Mass at St. Joseph’s Cathedral on Sunday last. After Compline in the evening, .there was , the usual procession, followed by Solemn Benediction of the' Blessed Sacrament. * ' ~ ; v’'
The ladies of St. Joseph’s Sewing Guild, whose efforts are now directed to making garments for orphan children, meet each Wednesday afternoon at 2.30 at their workroom in St. Joseph’s Hall. The officials of the guild desire to thank the following friends for donations, in r response to a recent appeal, towards the purchase of ; flannelette : Mesdames Cantwell, Dechan, Simpson, , Mow at, Wilson, Clark, N ees, Gumming, Stone, Misses Meenan and Mclntyre. to"''’-" /w. 5 .
In spite of '.'the boisterous weather, the cricket season opened successfully on Saturday, and the first day’s play in the senior matches was carried through on the various grounds. The system: of two-day matches is being followed again this season, - so . that no final results are available till : next Saturday. Christian Brothers secured -Za sub-stantial-lead over St. Kilda on the first innings, played at'Culling Park, but they made a most inauspicious opening of their' second innings, in which they have ; lost 'six
wickets for 11 runs. Double figures were scored for ,the» Christian Brothers in the first innings by J. Bond (33),J A. Tarletoir (32), and T. Thorn *(17). I In observance of the Feast of All Souls, there wasJ Solemn Requiem Mass, .commencing at . 7 a.m., 'at St. j> Joseph’s Cathedral on' Monday.' Father Collins (Holy ' Cross College, Mosgiel) was. celebrant, Father Kaveney, x deacon, Father Silk subdeacon, and Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., master of ceremonies. The incidental music . -was : sung very devotionally by the Dominican Nuns’ Choir. There was* large congregation, and many approached • the Holy. Table. Prior to the Mass Father Coffey read, a lengthy list of the deceased friends and' relatives of the parishioners, and exhorted the congregation to offer fefp vent prayers for the eternal repose of their. s£ul§. : At the conclusion of the Solemn Requiem Alass; ihb celebrant, ”- assisted by the attendant clergy, '■gave . the absolution at the catafalque, the whole’ ceremony being deeply impressive. ici v “ - ’- v ' .pleasant 1 function took place at the Bungalow Tearooms on Thursday evening, October 23, the occasion being'a farewell tendered to Air. W. A. At will, who for the - past five years has most efficiently filled the position of conductor of St. Patrick’s Basilica Choir, South Dun- ; edin, : and who recently resigned owing to having accepted an important position in Christchurch. In presenting Mr. A twill, on behalf of the choir members," with a silver inkstand and walking-stick, suitably inscribed. Rev. Father Delany.referred to tho many good qualities of the recipient', the conscientious manner in which ho carried out the onerous duties, of conductor, the high standard of efficiency to which the choir has reached under his leadership, and to the /general regret felt at his departure. In reply, Mr. Atwill sincerely thanked Father Delany for the kindly sentiments expressed regarding him, and the choir for its handsome presents. He assured the choir members that although he was going away for some time, he would always entertain a great regard for St. Patrick’s, where his services had met with so much appreciation. An excellent musical programme was rendered, the accompaniments being played by Miss B. Meade. HOLY CROSS COLLEGE, MOSGIEL; UNIVERSITY SUCCESSES. The following students of Holy Cross College were successful at tho recent term examinations of Otago University:—Third year terms; James Lennon (Dunedin), Chas. Tylee (Dunedin), and James Foley (Auckland). Second year terms: John O’Malley (Dunedin), Leslie Richards (Dunedin), Francis McMahon (Dunedin), Thomas McMahon (Dunedin), Francis Finlay (Dunedin). First year terms; Robert McCormack (Christchurch), Thomas Halley (Dunedin), James Maguire (Christchurch), Arthur Gregory (Christchurch), Peter Breen (Wellington), and John McGettigan (Dunedin).
