Wanganui
(From our own correspondent.)
■ ’■> / , v October 30. Rev. Father Bowden is visiting us for a week or two. Very Rev. Dean Holley, too, has been here for a few days, but is away again. -
The most important events just now are the various' “funds-raising” enterprises, and their name is legion. On .Wednesday night the Convent Stall people had a big dance at; tire Druids’ Hall, it being a very successful and enjoyable eveliing,-. i all interested in the stall working very hard. Busy long*.enough beforehand and on the night were Mesdames Meehan, Lloyd, Cullinane, and Warwick, and Mr. C. Morgan-..
On Saturday last Mr. and Mrs. Po,Benefield, assisted by the Aramoho St, Vincent de Paul folk,-gayq,,a garden party for the Aramoho Stall funds. Benefield’s Nursery, always interesting,'', was specially so that, day, the fine big, lawn at the house front being well filled with good things and good-natured people to buy them. Little Ida Benefield, dressed to represent “Joan of Arc,” and riding a battle charger, made an effective figure, and everyone worked very hard for her campaign. The Sweets Stall did good business, also afternoon tea was specially welcome, and round the corner a wonderful-looking nigger sold vegetables, seedlings, and pot plant's. -After spending all one’s money, a ramble up- the long garden finished off a most enjoyable afternoon. This garden party is the first of a “long suit,” as all the stalls will be having them in rapid succession. The days are becoming longer, and the evenings shorter and too warm for dancing, so I. shall be recording Saturday afternoon functions right up till Christmas very likely. On Monday night tho Hibernian Stall had a euchre party at the Villa Maria. This did not set out to be a very big affair, but it was a pleasantly-spent evening and quite a success.
Very Rev. Father O’Connell left by the Riverina for Australia. As president of the N.Z. Catholic Federation, he will be its representative at the Australasian Irish Convention to be held in Melbonrns next week. A night or two before Father O’Connell left, there was a meeting of stallholders and carnival folk generally, and at this meeting Mr. J. Carmody, in a very smart little speech, congratulated Father O’Connell on the honor conferred on him and on Wanganui. Father O’Connell replied very modestly, and as soon as wo got the opportunity, the rest of us congratulated our reverend pastor on the rattling good trip which has fallen to his lot (beside which a mere presidency is as nothing), and wished him a safe journey.
Died during the week, at the residence of her aunt (Mrs. Laird, Gonville), Muriel, only daughter of Mrs. Benefield, and the late Mr. Benefield. Only 15 years of age, little Muriel had been a sufferer for some time and a total invalid for many months. She was a bright and promising girl, popular with her school companions and a general favorite.R.l.P. '*■••■ . . Among the successful Victoria College students in the terms examination held in October, two pupils of the Convent High School secured passes. Miss K. Carroll passed her third terms in French and Latin as advanced subjects. Miss Carroll will require only one more subject to enable her to sit next year for her final section B.A. Miss Victorino Rnscoc passed her terms in Latin and French as pass subjects. Both girls arc to continue their studies at the Convent High School.
