Dedication of the Lateran Basilica. This church is commonly known as the basilica of St. John Lateran. It is the Cathedral of Rome, and was the first of the great basilicas consecrated to Divine worship after the accession of Constantine had given peace to the Church.' St. Josaphat, Bishop, and Martyr. ;>v St. Josaphat, a native of Poland, displayed, while still in his boyhood, such piety and fraternal charity as to excite the admiration of all who knew him. After having been for some years a monk of the Order of St. Basil, he was raised to the dignity of Archbishop. The zeal and success with which he preserved his flock from heresy and schism drew upon him the hatred of some sectarians," who compassed his death in 1623. St. Gertrude, Virgin. St. Gertrude was for many years Superioress of a community of Benedictine Nuns in Saxony. By fasting, perfect conformity to the rule of her Order, constant denial of her own will, and frequent meditation on the Passion of , our Blessed Redeemer, she endeavored to check the growth of any inordinate affection, and unite all the powers of the soul in a pure and intense love of God. She died in 1292, after having enriched the Church with writings which are of incalculable utility to all who aim at spiritual 'perfection. GRAINS OF GOLD MANE NOBISCUM DOMIN'E. Stay with us, Master, never yet Had souls more need to pray; Sweep from our hearts each vain regret. Fill them with heaven’s own calm, and let Thy light shine on though others set. Stay with us, Master, stay! Stay with us. Master, who but Thee Can cheer life’s wintry day, Can scatter clouds though dark they be, With light divine we feel, not see ? Weary, yet trusting, we turn to Thee, Stay with us, Master, stay! Stay with us, Master, when the hand Of death in dark array Strikes, and we go to the spirit land, Thine own bright home, so pure, so grand, There let us meet, a happy band, Master, with Thee to stay! Bring us, dear Master, safely there, To Thy loving heart we pray, Home from this exile dark with care To Thy Land of Love, so pure, so fair, In mercy gather us each one there, Master, with Thee to stay! REFLECTIONS. We shall do well to make this resolution: Never to think any good action too slight to bo worth practising, too mean to offer as a sacrifice to Almighty God. In heaven we shall know our titles of nobility, and ho who on earth chose to 'be the poorest and least known for love of his Saviour will be the first, the noblest, and the richest there. Think not of thyself, but of the work God has given thee to do not of happiness, but of right doing; not of what others shall say, but of what duty commands. Few words and many good actions, that is the right way to do good and to acquire the reputation of a wise and upright mind, which knows how to restrain itself .within due limits. ■ - . r < If one willingly bears the cross of Christ on his shoulder he soon feels- in his soul the charity of Christ for men’s salvation. —Father Eliot, Paulist.
