(From our own correspondent.) s . • •• ; -... October 3. Mr. P. P. Neagle, of ■ Taradale, lias been appointed .to a seat on tho Hawke's Bay County Council. The Australian Northern Uinion Footballers during their visit to Napier were afforded a very enjoyable time; and were the guests at the various entertainments held during their stay. On Friday last they were the guests of the Napier Hibernian Society at a euchre party and danco held in aid of the Hibernian Queen candidate. The winners in the euchre tournament were Miss O'Keefe and Mr. Ryan (one of tho Australian footballers). Music for the dancing was supplied by Mrs. C. Willis, and extras were played by Mrs. Keane and Miss Barry. On Saturday the visitors were the guests of the Napier Orphans'. Club, and on Monday of the - J. C. Williamson Company at the pantomime. On Wednesday night they were the guests of Miss Eileen Sattler at her "At home" held in Scinde Hall. Mr. M. Treston took occasion to .express, in a few wellchosen words, tho pleasure it had given generally to meet such fine" sports and a well-conducted ; body of men. Mr.

Kerwick responded; on behalf of the footballers, and thanked Miss Sattler. and ; the Napier 1 residents for the :hospitality that had been extended to them during their stay in Napier. "'■„ ~* A very successful "gift afternoon*' was • held at St. Patrick's Hall \ recently under i.the auspices. of the • Children of Mary, in aid of their stall at the forthcoming bazaar. There were some 50 guests present, and many pretty gifts were received. A dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. J. Harris, arid musical items were, contributed by Mesdames Willis and Keane, Misses Rogers, Collison, Lette, Doolan, Latapie, and others. .

- A highly successful ''At home" in the form of a social gathering . was , held in the Scinde Hall on Wednesday evening last, to further the candidature of Miss. Eileen Sattler, the convent candidate for the Queen Carnival. A large number of guests attended, and daTicing was kept up till the early hours. A dainty supper under the management of Miss Tuohy and committee was provided. The duties of M.C. Mere efficiently, carried out by Mr. D. Walsh, while the dance music was provided by Prentice's orchestra. The energetic secretaries were Messrs. L. Revel] and M. Kyne.

A jumble sale, in furtherance of the candidature of Miss Eileen Sattler, was held in Trigg's shop on Friday last, when a substantial sum was realised. The stall was managed by Mrs. L. Revell and Misses Tuohy and Mahoney; assisted by the convent girls. A concert is being held in Princess Hall on Wednesday night next) for the same purpose.

* : ; In furtherance* of the candidature of the Maori candidate, Miss L. Takarangi, in the Queen Carnival, a successful jumble sale, in charge of the committee headed by Mrs. E. Kirk, was held in Trigg's shop to-day. Many beautiful specimens of needlework, first-class produce, poultry, etc., were on sale, arid very brisk business was done throughout the day. Tho voting fund will no doubt bo considerably augmented as a result.

The bazaar in aid of the convent rebuilding fund-will commence in the Municipal Theatre on the 18th inst., and present indications point to very successful results. The various art unions and competitions are progressing satisfactorily, and the public generally are readily responding to the atppeal.

The committee supporting the Hibernian candidate in the Queen Carnival are arranging for a concert to bo held in the Municipal Theatre at an early date. The programme will be contributed to by first-class talent, the performers including Mr. Hamilton Hodges.

Competition in the Queen Carnival is very keen, and the supporters of the. various candidates are working hard to top the poll. The number of votes recorded by each candidate up to to-day were as follows: Convent (Miss Sattler) 7100, Maori (Miss Takarangi) 5300, Soldiers' (Miss Morecroft) 3500, Hibernian (Miss Kenny) 2500.

The Catholics of Hastings and Taradale are also working for bazaars to be held in their respective districts at an early date.
