OBITUARY

MISS EILEEN DALY, AUCKLAND. The news of the death. of Miss Eileen Daly, third daughter of Mr. and Mrs. J. J. Daly, Collingwood Street, I ousonby, Auckland, east quite a gloom over the parish of which she was a member. Though only 21 years of age, she was widely known and much loved, for her bright and sunny disposition won for her hosts of friends, which kindly feelings were but strengthened during the trying ordeal of her protracted illness. Though young, she was a keen Church worker, and continued her activities «in behalf of the reduction of St. Patrick's Cathedral debt till a day or two before her death. On .the evening of September 17 (the date of her decease) the Sodality of tho Children of Mary (of which she was a member) attended in a body at her late residence to offer the Rosary and. prayers for. the happy repose of her soul. Her remains were removed to St. Patrick's Cathedral on Friday morning, and at 9 o'clock . a Solemn Requiem Mass. was sung by her friend and Spiritual Director, Rev. Father W. J. Fordo (Administrator, of the Cathedral), the music incidental to the occasion being rendered by the Children of Mary choir. The "Dead March" was played on the organ by Miss Lily Ross while the funeral, procession passed out of the churchher remains being borne by the intimate friends of the deceased. ■., At 10 o'clock the funeral cortege left .the ■ Cathedral for ! 'Recently the remains of the late Mr. T. L. Harney were interred in the Timaru Cemetery, and despite the wet weather a large number of old i acquaintances and friends assembled to pay a last tribute of respect. Mr. Harney - had reached the mature age of 80 years, and so well known had he become during a residence here which extended back to 1865, that to both town and country people he had come to be looked upon as one of the fixed institutions of the place. A professional gardener, Mr. Harney had considerable experience at Home and on the Continent before coming to Timaru over 50 years ago, and his services were in much ■ request in the district, where he has been responsible for laying out many fine gardens. He was born at Ballinsloe, 'Co. Galway, and married before he .left the Old Country. For some years he did useful service as a member of the Timaru Borough Council, on which body he served for two terms, at intervals. Ho was a prominent member of tho Foresters' Lodge, being one of the oldest Foresters in Timaru, and a Past Grand Master. Mr. Harney was also a member of the Timaru Cemetery Board, and a Justice of the Peace. He was a staunch and devout parishioner of the Church of tho Sacred Heart. When he arrived in Timaru there was no church there, but from the time tho first Catholic church was built he was never happier than when working for it in some way. Mr. Harney's wife predeceased him by about 10 years. They had a family of sixfive daughters and one son, the latter being Mr. James Harney, of Greymouth. Tho daughters are: Mrs. Burke, of Wanganui; Mrs. McKay, of Wellington; Mrs. Mcintosh, of Fairlie; and Miss Mary Harney, of Timaru. The other daughter, Mrs. Shearan, of Fairlie, died: some few years ago. On the day of Mr. Harney's death the flag was flown halfmast at the Municipal Chambers in Timaru.R.l.P. MR. JAMES GUERIN, WESTPORT. On September 7 there passed away at his residence, Palmerston Street, Westport, an old and highly-respected resident in the person of Mr. James Guerin, native of Co. Limerick, Ireland. Deceased had been in failing health for many months, and -the end was not unexpected. Attended throughout his last illness by Right Rev. Mgr. Walshe and Father Power, he passed away peacefully, fortified by the rites of Holy Church. The deceased gentleman was 80 years of age, and landed in Melbourne 60 years ago. Two years later he came to New Zealand, following up tho mining rushes on the West Coast, and finally settling in Westport. The remains were interred at Orawaiti Cemetery, a large concourse of friends attending. Deceased leaves a sorrowing widow, two children, John and Mrs. Tredennick, and two step-children, Mrs. D. Reedy (Westport) and P. Phelan (Railway Department, Lower Hutt). A third stepson, Edward, paid the supreme sacrifice on Gallipoli.—R.l.P.
