A GLARING FALSEHOOD.
That Catholics are a priest-ridden people is an untruth in the case of any country on either side of -. the Atlantic, and a particularly glaring/ : .falsehood in' the case of the United States (says the Ave Maria). The latest religious statistics available from the" Census Bureau of Washington having to do with the ;- period ending in December, 1916—state that while the: average number of Church members, to each minister; was, in 1916, 219, the average number of Catholics to easch priest was 776; in other words, Protestants are three times as parson-ridden as, Catholics..; are priestridden. The very-truth of ' the"matter is that, as Longfellow once put it, this country is not priestridden but press-riddena condition much more to be' ueplured than the suggested alternative. ....... ... ..' -■%
