Adhesive Fly Paper. In answer to a Hawera correspondent we give the. following formula for making adhesive fly papers: To lib of resin add 2 fluid drams of linseed oil; while the mixture is warm, spread it on stiff paper. Most frequently imitation parchment or butter paper is used. Another recipe often used is to simply oil the paper and coat with turpentine varnish. Spanish Onion Pickle. Peel the onions, slice them thinly, place them in a large jar, and sprinkle each layer liberally with salt and lightly with red pepper. Cover with vinegar, and exclude the air by means of bladder or paper brushed over on both sides with white of egg, and store in a cool, dry place. The pickle should he ready for use in ten or fourteen days. Chocolate Filling. Three ounces of good cocoa or grated chocolate, 2oz of butter, sugar to taste. Put the butter, sugar, and chocolate in a basin, and stand this in a pan of boiling water. Lei the. ingredients melt gradually, stirring now and then. When quite liquid, pour into jars. Warm slightly before you spread it. Harricot Mutton. Cut lib neck of mutton into chops, melt a lit titdripping in an iron saucepan : when hot put in the chops and fry until a nice brown, then remove them : peel and slice two onions, fry them, sprinkle in loz flour. Let it brown slightly, then add half-a-pint cold water gradually, and stir until it boils. Wash and peel the turnip, scrape the carrot, and cut both into nice pieces: return chops to saucepan : add the vegetables, and pepper and salt according to taste, and simmer for about one hour.
.Egg and Potato Omelet. ...'.., Required: Three eggs, four slightly rounded tablespotmfuls of mashed potato, gill of milk or vegetable stock, two teaspoonfuls each of flour, chopped .parsley, and grated onion, seasoning, half an ounce of dripping or other fat. Separate the yolks and whites of the eggs. Add the yolks, milk, flour, onion, and parsley to the smoothly-mashed potato. Season and beat well to lighten the mixture. Beat the whites to a stiff froth, stir them lightly into the potato, etc. Pour the warmed fat into a fireproof dish, greasing it well over inside. Pour in the mixture, and bake in a quick oven till delicately browned and well puffed up. Serve in the dish at once, with or without thickened gravy. Household Hints. When boiling rice add a little lemon juice to the water. This makes the rice white and separates the' grains. " • In mixing batter the lumps of flour can be avoided by putting the salt in the flour before wetting. Spreading a little flour on the top' of a cake will sometimes prevent the icing from running. China with gilding should never be Washed with water containing soda, for the soda will soon take off the gilding. Soap will answer the purpose of coda perfectly and will do no damage. A teaspoonful of good olive oil taken every two or three hours and a little taste of some pure jam or jelly immediately afterwards to prevent any irritation of the throat by the oil and also snuffing a little of oil from the forefinger up each nostril, has cured many an influenza cold. It is a bad practice to put burnt saucepans in soda water to soak, for, although this removes the burnt portion, it makes the saucepan liable to burn again -when it is used. A better plan is to fill it with salt and water, leave a few hours, then bring slowly to the boil. The burnt particles will then come off without any trouble.
