DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH

(From our own correspondent.) February 10. A week's mission, to be conducted by the Marist Missioners, is to begin at St. Mary's Church, Manchester Street, on Sunday, March 2, and conclude on the following Sunday with the Devotion of the Forty Hours' Adoration.

In connection with the re-opening of St, Bede’s College for the present scholastic year. Very Rev. Dean Regnault, S.M., commenting on the successes already attained thereat, even under the difficulties attendant on lack of accommodation, strongly appealed to his parishioners to send their boys to St. Bede’s for the higher courses of education. The foundation stone of the new college will be laid on Sunday, February 23. Bro. J. M. Coffey, 8.P., presided at the recent ordinary meeting of St. • Patrick’s branch of the HA.C.B. Society, and referred to the death of Bro. P. Grealy, an old and respected member of the branch. A motion of sympathy with Mrs. Grealy in her bereavement was carried in silence, the members stand ing. The sick allowance for the fortnight was £7, and accounts amounting to £52 18s 7d were passed for payment. Two candidates were proposed for membership, and on© new member initiated. . The balance sheet was submitted by the secretary (Bro. Grimes) showing, notwithstanding the fact that the sick fund was taxed during the quarter to the amount of £202 2s —equal to an amount for perhaps two years under normal conditions, the position of the branch to be most satisfactory.' „ The auditors (Bros. M. Garty and E. J. P. Wall) furnished a report eulogistic of :the work and devoted txcxqq oonrofoMr TIAQQ Doorof n»«TT

A meeting, thoroughly representative of the men of the Cathedral and St. Mary’s parishes, was held at the episcopal residence on Sunday afternoon last in connection with the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, - Rev. Dr. Kennedy, Adm., presided, and in his opening remarks apologised for the unavoidable absence of Very Rev. Dean Regnault, and Mr. J. R. Hayward, both of whom expressed their keen interest in the project. Owing to the fact that hundreds of intending patrons have in previous years been unable to gain admission to the Theatre Royal, it was decided to hold this year’s concert in the Coliseum, which is capable of accommodating a much larger audience. The committee was unanimous that the programme be purely national, and that the concert be held on Monday, March 17 (St. Patrick’s Day). Messrs. M. Grimes and J. McNamara were elected joint secretaries, and a programme committee was appointed. The proceeds will be devoted to Nazareth House.
