DIOCESE OF DUNEDIN

Advice has been received in Dunedin that Captain P. A. Ardagh (Military Cross) has been awarded the D.S.O. Prior to leaving for the Front, where he has seen very strenuous service, Captain Ardagh was in medical practice in Christchurch. He is a son of Mr. J. Ardagh, Glenavy, and a brother of Father C. Ardagh, of St. Joseph's Cathedral, Dunedin. Word has also been received that Captain Ardagh's brother Jack has been promoted to the rank of lieutenant. A Solemn Office and Requiem Mass for the repose of the soul of the late Bishop Verdon was celebrated in St. Mary's Cathedral, Sydney, on Friday morning, November 29, at 10 o'clock. His Excellency the Apostolic Delegate presided. Father P. J. Murphy was celebrant, Father A. J. Hogan deacon, and Father J. H. Morris subdeacon, with Father E. Brauer master of ceremonies. The Office was chanted by the students of St. Patrick's College, Manly, conducted by the Very Rev. Dr. Hayden, President. His Grace the Archbishop of Sydney (Most Rev. -Masses will be celebrated on Christmas morning at St. Joseph's Cathedral at 6,7, 8, and 9 o'clock. There will be Solemn,; High/Mass commencing at 11 o'clock, and in the evening, as customary, the choir will render a number, of sacred selections, concluding with Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. Masses will be celebrated on Christmas Day at North-East Valley at 7,8, and 9; Kaikorai, at 8.30; and Mornington, at 10 o'clock. The Sisters of Mercy of the St. Vincent de Paul Orphanage, South Dunedin, will be very grateful for Christmas donations to that deserving institution, the needs of which have been lately intensified, many children, orphaned as a result of the influenza epidemic, being provided with a home there. The Sisters desire, to acknowledge the following from "A Friend," Wyndham:—"Dear Sisters,l am enclosing a pound (£1) as a small Xmas donation for your children. May God prosper your work." There passed away recently at Dunedin Hospital, within a few days of each other, Winifred and Nora, beloved daughters of Mr. W. Francis, of South Dunedin. Both deceased were prominent members of the Children of Mary Sodality and enthusiastic members of the Altar Society of St. Patrick's Basilica. Much sympathy is expressed towards Mr. Francis and family in their double loss, and with them a large circle of friends mourn the loss of two that were loved and respected by all.—P. Among the victims to the influenza epidemic was Mrs. Sarah Koch (nee Malaghan), wife of Mr. 'W. Koch, of Otautau, Southland, who passed away at Dunedin on Thursday, December 12. The deceased was a daughter of the late Thomas Malaghan, a pioneer resident of Queenstown. The mother of deceased still survives. Mrs. M. C. Daniel (South Dunedin) is a sister, Mr. P. Malaghan (Tapanui) a brother, and Mrs. D. O'Connor (Kent. England) and Misses Nellie and Charia Marshall (Queenstown) step-sisters of the late Mrs. Koch. Her husband and three children are left to mourn their loss. —R.I.P. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Poff, of Till Street, Oamaru, recently sustained a double bereavement in the death of their only son, William, at Invercargill, and their fourth daughter, Kate, who passed away at the residence of her parents. The late. William Poff was a very successful farmer at Longbush, Southland, and left a wife and young family to mourn their loss. Both of the deceased were interred on the same day.—R.l.P. Taking (as he said) the first opportunity afforded him of referring to the late Bishop Verdon, Father Coffey, at Vespers on last Sunday evening at St. Joseph's Cathedral, spoke feelingly of the saintly character of the late Bishop, and of his intense love for his people and regard for their spiritual welfare. Father Coffey enumerated the many good works the late Bishop Verdon accomplished in the diocese, the results of which are most beneficial and far-reaching. The schools' sports in connection with the Otago Caledonian Society having been postponed, owing to the recent influenza epidemic, to a date yet to be arranged, the Christian Brothers desire their pupils who have tickets issued in accordance with the date originally fixed, to return same this week. These tickets will be again distributed when the date of the event is decided upon.
