DIOCESE OF CHRISTCHURCH

(From our own correspondent.) December 16. Father F. Buckley (Auckland) and Father Zoukra (Maronite priest) are the guests of his Lordship the Bishop at the episcopal residence. On last Sunday evening, at the Cathedral, his Lordship the Bishop addressed the congregation on the approaching festival of Christmas. His Lordship referred to the recent epidemic, and expressed the deep sympathy of himself and clergy for all who had suffered bereavement. He paid an eloquent tribute to those who were engaged in fighting the scourge —the medical men and nursing staffs. Our own Sisters and Brothers had, he said, participated nobly in assisting the stricken day and night, and the result will surely be the same feelings of reverence and appreciation for these religious by the public that Catholics have always entertained. -St. Matthew's (Ladies) branch of. the Hibernian Society resumed its meetings on Monday, evening,

December 9. Sister;E. Brophy, 8.P., there being a full roll of officers and a fair attendance of members. The sum of £ll 6d was passed for payment. The correspondence related chiefly to cases of sickness, and revealed the healthy fact that although a great number of the Sisters had been attacked by the epidemic all had recovered or were improving in health. Two candidates were nominated for life honorary membership, The balance-sheet for the previous quarter, as submitted by the secretary (Sister R. Rodgers), was received and adopted. It revealed a state of finance that was most satisfactory to the branch. An addition to the trophies to be presented this year to the successful pupils of the Marist Brothers' School is a beautiful cup, donated by Mr. J. Cassidy, of Springfield, in memory of his grandson, Gunner Hughie Cahill, of the N.Z.F.A. (40th Reinforcements), who died at sea on September- 2 last. This trophy will be called the Hugh Cahill Memorial Cup, and, together with a gold medal, will be presented each year to the best athlete in the school. The Brothers are very grateful to Mr. Cassidy for this donation, which will serve to perpetuate the memory of one who endeared himself to his teachers and comrades by his quiet disposition and manly character.
