THE CATHOLIC WORLD

There are 124 million Catholics in the Allied countries and 61 millions in the Central Powers, not counting some millions of Uniate Ukrainians. Jerome Conor, the Washington sculptor, has received a commission to design the memorial to be erected in Washington to the nuns of the battlefield. It is to be finished in 1920. The Rev. Wilfrid Moor (formerly an Anglican minister in London), who was recently ordained a priest in Rome, has taken the doctorate of philosophy in the International College of the Dominican Order. %' The bronze medal in the Faculty of Education of Queen's University, Kingston, Canada, for the past year, was won by Sister Aloysia, of Lindsay. There are at present in China 48 Apostolic Vicariates, one diocese, one Apostolic Prefecture, and one Independent Mission. There are 51 bishops, 2297 priests (1432 European and 865 Chinese). Among these missionaries some are religious, others are seculars; the religious belong to 12 different societies and the foreign priests are of 10 different nationalities. We extend a hearty welcome to the Rev. Brothers Edmund (MacDonald) and John Baptist (Kelly), two Marist Brothers, who came this week from England for St Mary's College. Negombo (says the Ceylon Catholic Messenger of September 2). This brings to five the number of European Brothers in Negombo. That. number will be increased later on, when travelling on sea becomes less dangerous. Carmelite nuns from the London and Preston houses of the Order arrived in Glasgow recently, and took possession of their new convent, the splendid edifice m spacious grounds formerly known as Rawcliffe House, Mansionhouse Road. Langside. This ancient contemplative Order has been unknown in the west of Scotland since the Reformation. Among those, clergy and others, who called at Rawcliffe to welcome the newcomers was the Archbishop of Liverpool, Most Rev. Dr. Whiteside. Just 50 years ago, on August 30, the community of the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ established their Provincial Mother-house at St. Joseph's Hospital, Fort Wayne, ind. Although a golden jubilee commemorative of the event had been announced, the Sisters have decided to celebrate the anniversary quietly. The community was founded by Miss Katherine Kasper in Germany in 1851 for the care of the sick, of orphans, and for teaching in academies, parochial and industrial schools. Through the efforts of Bishop Luers the Sisters were brought to Fort Wayne, where is now the Provincial Mother-house of the Order in America. In connection with the mother-house is the St. Joseph's Hospital. There has been a wave of animosity against the Church, coming from the sects in the British Isles, and the receding tide has left no fewer than 23 Anglican clergymen in the Net of the Fisherman. Of these, 11 come from one diocese—that to which the Anglican Bishop Hensley Henson was recently appointed,—and it can only be supposed that the appointment of a man as chief shepherd who believes neither in the Divinity of our Blessed Lord nor in other fundamental truths of Christianity settled the question for these waverers. Amongst the others are three London clergymen, four vicars of country parishes; a bishop's secretary, who

was received in France by the Bishop of Arras, having worked there for some- time with* the Red Cross.; and four M.A.'s. The results of the elections in Luxemburg, where a general election was held, are in every way favorable to the Catholic and the Allied causes. Twenty members were elected of the Catholic Right Party, the Socialists only secured eight returns, the Liberals four, the Labor Party three, and the Independent Clericals two candidates. Luxemburg is loyal to the Catholic Church, and is the same towards the Allied cause, although being in the grip of Germany she can do very little to express her feelings except suffer. Her young Grand Duchess suffers with her people, and refuses the overtures of the various German princelings of Protestant faith who have been forced upon her at the Kaiser's orders since the occupation. She spends much of her time in a favorite convent of her little kingdom, where she is free from molestation. hi one of its latest meetings the Council of State of Warsaw passed a unanimous resolution demanding that the Polish Government take immediate steps for the abolition of all the restrictions on the Catholic Church which were imposed by the Russian Government. The council added the expression of its desire that the Council of the Polish Regency should profit by the presence of Mgr. Ratti, Apostolic Delegate, to provide for the installation of bishops in those sees which had been vacant for-several years, such as Lublin, and also the appointment of several coadjutor bishops. The representative of the political department has declared that a concordat with the Holy See could not be concluded in the present conditions prevailing under the regime established by the Central Powers. It is the political department that institutes the commission on which the Polish bishops sit, and which will elaborate the basis of a future concordat. The relations of the Apostolic Visitor, Mgr. Ratti, with the people are of the most cordial kind. Bishops, clergy, and laity have rallied round him, and already several important schemes have been initiated.
