Oamaru (From our own correspondent.) October 21. The half-yearly general Communion of the Hibernian Society took place at the Basilica on last Sunday morning, when a large number of members in regalia approached the Holy Table at the half-past 8 o’clock Mass. . Work is proceeding steadily at the main dome and additions to St. Patrick’s Basilica, and in a short time the building should be out of the contractor’s hands. The death of Mr. Charles Herbert, which occurred last week, will come as a distinct loss to Oamaru, and sporting circles loses one of its most ardent supporters. The late Mr. Herbert was born in Australia, and on his arrival some years ago in New Zealand he followed various pursuits before entering into business in Oamaru. A keen enthusiast in the “noble art’’ of selfdefence, he opened a boxing school in Tyne Streeet, and at the same time was appointed instructor at the Waitaki Boys High School. Some of his pupils from the latter institution have won championship honors, notably “Bob” Duthio and “Mont” Ongley. It is now some years since he met Mitchell, of Millerton, at Christchurch, where he defeated him in the heavyweight championship of New Zealand. He .retired undefeated. Deceased was a leading spirit in the formation of the now defunct Oamaru Boxing Association, was vice-president of the North Otago . Rugby. SubUnion, and of the Excelsior Football Club. & He also held membership in most of the various local institutions and clubs. His cheery greeting .will be missed by a large circle of friends, whose sympathy will be extended to his sister (Mrs. Jordan) and brother, both of Oamaru. There was a large and representative gathering of mourners at the funeral, which included members of the Oamaru Fire Brigade and of various sports bodies. Father O’Connell officiated at the Basilica and graveside.—-H.I.P. Timaru There was a good attendance, and a very enjoyable evening was spent, at the Girls’ School Hall, Craigie Avenue, on Tuesday evening, October 8, when a social was held for the purpose of augmenting the funds of St. John Tennis Club. The hall was tastefully decorated with red and white (the club colors) by members of the committee, who spared no effort to make the function, as it was afterwards pronounced to be, the best of the season.’’ The committee desires to especially thank Mrs. D. Martin, Mrs. Win; Gillespie, au d Miss M. McAteer, who worked so assiduously during the afternoon and evening, and all other ladies who by their generous assistance in supplying refreshments contributed so largely to the success of the social; also Mr. D. Doyle, who so admirably performed the duties of M.C. ; and the Misses Lynch, McDonald, and Dennehy, for “extras” played during the evening. At the close of a long and strenuous season the members of the Marist Brothers’ loot-ball team were, through the kindness and. generosity of Messrs. W. Hall, C. Hall, N. Mangos, and D. Pearce, conveyed in motors to Wairaate last Saturday to meet the State school, ’winners of the country section of the football competition. From the start of the match it was evident that the young and light “greens” knew too much of the game for their stalwart opponents, who tried uuavailingly to outdo the Marists, who were determined to try their scoring ability : and as a result from passing and loose rushes 13 tries were registered, while Waimate were unable*to pierce the visitors’ defence. By this victory another pf our Catholic schools takes the proud position of champion in its district, thus proving that success is not confined to one locality, but is the order of the day throughout the Dominion for the Brothers’ schools. - .
