A P.P.A. EFFORT

The Southland correspondent of the Dunedin Star writes thus: "The two recent by-elections in the North Island have caused more or less talk in Southland regarding the power that the P.P.A. will have at the next general election. Recently at an election of five directors at an annual meeting of a dairy factory company the P.P.A. are alleged to have put up a ticket of five of their members. Against them stood four candidates of the Roman Catholic religion and one Anglican. The latter, it is stated, took a few days" holiday prior to the meeting, and lodged with the secretary some 400 proxies in his favor. A glance round the room convinced the P.P.A. candidates that theelection was practically a walk-over for them, but they reckoned without the proxy votes, the whole of which were cast against their ticket, and resulting in a 10 to 1 beating for them. The organisation has apparently much to learn in the way of organising electors, and for the good of the country let lis hope they may continue ignorant."
