MOUNT MAGDALA

On the Lincoln Road, a few miles from Christchurch, is an institution which is quietly doing magnificent work, not only for the Catholic Church, but for the whole Dominion. The good Sisters of the Good Shepherd devote their lives to the care of orphans and the saving of the unfortunates who have wandered from the straight way. For over thirty years Mount Magdala has been amongst us, and the amount of good it has done can never be sufficiently appreciated. .Within its walls about four hundred orphans and penitents find a secure home where nothing is left undone by the devoted nuns to make them happy and comfortable. The remotest parts of New Zealand, as well as Christchurch, send inmates thither, and they are all received by the Sisters with tender Christian charity. The Order of the Good Shepherd was founded in France by a woman of humble origin, named Rose Virginia Belletier, and true to the splendid traditions of that Catholic race, the nuns of the Order have gone abroad into far lands to labor for Christ and to make His love known to the world. Work like theirs is always sure of appreciation among the good people of every class and creed, and in His mysterious ways God provides for such institutions and enables them to carry on their apostolic labors. Charitable people only need to be reminded of the existence of an institution like Mount Magdala in order to share in the good done by generous contributions ; and it is to the credit of humanity that such contributions are always forthcoming when needed. Very gladly we remind readers of the Tablet that the Sisters are holding a Garden Fete on October 26 and 28, and we commend its support to all good Catholics. Many may be able to be present, but even those who live at a distance can show their appreciation of the good work of the Sisters in a substantial manner.
