DEATH OF CARDINAL FARLEY

We were informed by cable last week of the death of the distinguished American churchman, Cardinal Farley. His Eminence the late John Murphy Cardinal Farley, Archbishop of New York, was born at Newton Hamilton, County Armagh, Ireland, in April, 1842. He was educated at St. Macartan’s College, Monaghan, and at New York and Rome. He was ordained to the priesthood at the American College, Rome, in 1870 : was secretary to Archbishop McCloskey from 1872 to 1884 ; was appointed Vicar-General of the archdiocese of New York in 'lß9l ; Domestic Prelate to Pope Leo XIII. in 1892, and Protonotary-Apos-tolic in 1895. He was consecrated Auxiliary-Arch-bishop of New York, with the title of the See of Zeugma, in 1895, succeeding Archbishop Corrigan in 1903 ; was appointed assistant to the Pontifical Throne in 1904, and in 1911 was raised to the Cardinalate.
