DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND
(From our own correspondent.) August 23. The devotion of the Forty Horn's’ Adoration was commenced at St. Benedict’s Church on last Sunday. A special sermon was preached by Father Forde, of Taumarunui, on Sunday evening, and also one by Father Brennan, of St. Patrick’s Cathedral, on Monday evening. Large congregations attended the devotion throughout the forty hours. The-High Altar was beautifully decorated for the occasion. The military service ballots continue to .steadily deplete the ranks of many ardent church workers. In the ballot published this week Mr. J. T. Fitzgerald, Diocesan Secretary of the Federation, was amongst the number called up. There passed away at the residence of his mother-in-law, Mrs. Kilbride, Matamata, on Thursday last, Mr. Peter Berkhout, after a long and painful illness, borne with true Christian fortitude. Deceased, who was a native of Holland, was a most exemplary Catholic, and was for many years a devoted member of the Holy Family Confraternity at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. He is survived by his wife and child and a brother (Mr. Harry Berkhout, of Ponsonby).—R.l.P.
