(From our own correspondent.) August y. Sunday last was observed in all churches in this diocese as a day of special intercession for those at the war and for an honorable and lasting peace. At St. Patrick’s Cathedral large congregations attended, and those present joined in united prayer for the objects
f - -• ... named and for the repose of the souls of those killed in the war. Exposition of the Most Blessed Sacrament lasted throughout the day. On Thursday morning Solemn Requiem Masses were celebrated at all the churches in the city and suburbs. At the Cathedral Mass was celebrated by his Lordship the Bishop, assisted by Fathers Hunt and O’Doherty, with Very Rev. Chancellor Holbrook as master of ceremonies. • Catholic education in Auckland and the indigent children of Catholics in Auckland have benefited within the last few days by a handsome bequest of approximately £13,000, made by the late Miss Mary Waters, foxmexly of Garfield Street, Parnell. The money is the residue of the estate, a number of private bequests having been provided for in the will. Messrs. P. B. Darby, E. W. Coleman, and James Tapper, of Auckland, have been deputed as trustees to realise it and to pay the proceeds to the Catholic Bishop for the time being of the Diocese of Auckland, to be used and applied by him for any one or more of the following purposes (a) For the establishment or erection of any Catholic school for the education, maintenance, or upbringing of children from deserted or neglected homes and orphan children of the Catholic faith; (b) in the construction of any additions' or making of any alterations in any such school : '(c) in the maintenance or upkeep of any such school. The will also provides that such schools shall remain under the supervision, management, and control of the Catholic Bishop of Auckland, and that they shall be constructed of brick, stone, concrete, or other suitable permanent materials.
