Napier

(From our own correspondent.) August S. The school football competition for- the Ross Shield, which is open to all the schools in Hawke’s Bay, was concluded, as far as Napier is concerned, on Saturday last, when the Marist Brothers’ School team met and defeated a team picked from the Napier Main School A and B teams. The game was somewhat marred by a gale of wind, nevertheless a fine exhibition of Rugby was given by both teams. Playing with the wind in the first half, the Main School team scored a try, which was converted, and half-time was called with the score 5 to nil against Marists. This score was remarkable for being the first and only score registered against the Greens throughout the season. On changing ends the Marist team scored two tries, neither of which was converted, the game ending in favor of Marists' by 6 points to 5. Great interest was taken in the match, as the Napier School had held the shield for several years, and had been training hard to - avoid defeat by the “little” school under the hill. Though the rivalry was so keen the match was played in the best spirit by the boys, and the master who had charge of the defeated team was amongst the first to congratulate Brother Walter on the success, of his team. Prior to this match, which was a special challenge for the right to represent Napier against other districts in Hawke’s Bay for the shield, the Marist team had defeated all the schools in Napier, their record being as follows: —Matches played 7, won 7, lost nil, points for 180, points against nil.
