HIBERNIAN SOCIETY, CHRISTCHURCH

(From our own cox-respondent.) ST. PATRICK'S BRANCH. The half-yearly meeting of St. Patrick’s branch 1T.A.C.8. Society was held in the Hibernian Hall on Monday evening, July 1. Bro. J. Jacques, 8.P., presided, there being a full roll of officers and a good attendance of members. The sick visitors (Bros. McCormick and O’Toole) reported their visits in connection with the sick and distressed, and the amount of £ls 3s 4d was passed fox- payment under this heading. Accounts for £5 17s were also passed, and the business sheet for the district meeting was discussed. The principal business before the branch was the election of officers, the following being appointed for the ensuing half-year: —-President; Bro. J. M. Coffey ; vice-presi-dent, Bro. T. P. O’Rourke : secretary, Bro. M. Grimes : assistant secretary, Bro. M. Alannix : treasurer, Bro. W. P. Daly; warden, Bro. L. Courtney; guardian, Bro. A. F. Jarman : sick visitors, Bros. Janies McCormick and L. Haughey : auditors, Bros. M. Garty 7 and E. J. P. Wall: delegates to Catholic Federation, Bros. AI. Grimes and M. Alannix; delegate to U.F.S. Council, Bro. AI. Grimes: delegates lo U.F.S. dispensary, Bros, M. Grimes and G. Dobbs; delegates to BenevolentAssociation, Bros. James McCormick and A. F. Jarman; hall committee—Bros. P. Pearce. J. M. Coffey, J. Curry, M. Grimes, W. Rodgers, J. Jacques, G. Getson. J. Finnerty, and T. P. O'Rourke. P.P. Bro. J. Jacques then installed the officers, each of whom acknowledged the confidence placed in him. One new member was initiated. ST. MATTHEW’S (LADIES BRANCH. The half-yearly meeting of St. Matthew’s (Ladies’) bianch was held in (he Hibernian Hall on Monday evening, July S. Sister E. Brophy presided, and there was a good attendance oi members. The principal business before the meeting was the election of officers for the ensuing half-y which resulted as follows: President, Sister E. Brophy ; vice-president. Sister E. Jacques: secretary, Sister R. Rodgers ; treasurer, Sister M. Smythe; sick visitors, Sisters M. Duggan and C. Flannelly : warden. Sister S. Greenlees ; guardian, Sister Knwan . assistant secretary, Sister K. Bridgman ; auditois, Bros. E. A\ all and AI. Garty ; delegates to Catholic Federation. Sisters K. Ryan and S. Morgan ; delegates to U.F.S. Council, Sister C. Greaney. Birring the evening Fathers Fogarty and Kelly (Gisborne) attended the meeting, and to the latter the president extended, on behalf of the branch, a hearty welcome. In a happy reply Father Kelly thanked the" Sisters for the reception accorded him, and wished the branch every success. P.P. Sister D. Smythe conducted the installation ceremony. Father Fogarty, apologising for the absence of the chaplain (Father Long) on account of illness, congratulated the officers on their election, and wished them a pleasant term of office. Bro. President J. M. Coffey, on behalf of St. Patrick’s branch, wished the officers every success, and expressed the appreciation of the many services rendered by the Sisters to his branch. Each of the elected in turn thanked the branch for the confidence placed in them. ST. MARY’S BRANCH, CHRISTCHURCH NORTH. The half-yearly meeting of St. Mary’s branch was held on Monday, July 8. Bro. A. J. Ormandy, 8.P., presided, and there was a fair attendance of members! An amount of £2 was passed for sick pay. The clear! ance of a brother from St. Joseph’s branch, Dunedin, was accepted. The secretary (Bro. Johnston) presented a statement showing the loss to the branch of soldiers’ contributions, both to the management and sick and funeral funds. The election of officers for the ensuing term resulted as follows:—President, Bro. A, J. Ormandy; vice-president, Bro. T. Gardiner; treasurer, Bro. T. Y. Wagstaff; warden, Bro. R. Hampton; guardian, Bro. T. N. Dwaxi; sick visitors, Bros. A. J. Ormandy and R. Hampton; auditors, Bros. R. P. O’Shaughnessy and F. A. Roche; delegate to U.F.S.

Dispensary, Bro. J. 11. Johnston; delegate to U.F.S. Council, Bro. J. V. Kaveney ; delegate to-U.F'.S. Benevolent Association, Bro. T. Y. Wagstaff. The newlyelected officers were duly installed by the District Deputy (Bro. R. P. O'Shaughnessy), who in the course of a brief address complimented the branch on the steady progress being made, and advised the members to loyally support their officers. The chaplain (Father Roche) also addressed the brothers, who briefly returned thanks for their election. At the previous meeting of the society the opportunity was taken of welcoming back from the front Bros. F. A. Roche and E. L. Cray, this being the first meeting at which they were present since their return. Both-the brothers are looking well, despite the hardships and severe times they experienced. Bro. Gray was gassed, and Bro. Roche was, m October last, badly wounded. Both brothers have now accepted their discharge from the forces.
