N.Z. CATHOLIC FEDERATION
WELLINGTON DIOCESAN COUNCIL. - . The monthly meeting of the executive committee was held at St. Joseph’s Hall, Buckle Street, on Wednesday, June 5. In the unavoidable absence of the president (Father Hurley, S.M.), Mr. T. J. McCosker was elected to the chair, the members present being Major Halpin, Messrs. J. A. Scott, P. D. Hoskins, J. McGowan, J. A. Corry, B. J. Guise, B. Nolan, J. E. Gamble, and W. F. Johnson (secretary). The usual routine business was transacted and correspondence dealt with. The secretary reported the steps that had been taken with reference to an attempt to commit societies in the public service to the platform of the Teachers’ Institute concerning scholarships at private registered secondary schools, and stated that the attempt ol the Teachers’ Institute had failed in its object. The date of the diocesan council meeting was fixed for July 11, and the meeting will be held in St. Anne’s Hall, Green Street, Newtown. A sub-committee was appointed to make final arrangements for the meeting, the committee to report on the 25th inst. The council’s representatives on the Women’s Hostel Board reported that the hostel was still fully occupied, and that there was a prospect of acquiring the freehold of the property in the immediate future. Funds were, however, urgently needed, the response to the special appeal sent out having been very disappointing. Feeling reference was made to the destruction of St. Mary of the Angels’ Church by fire, and the secretary was directed to convey the sympathy of the council to Father Mahony and the congregation of St. Mary’s. It was decided to meet on the 25th inst., to consider the annual report and statement of accounts, and to inform all parish committees that the books will be closed on the 20th inst., before which date all balances now in hand should be remitted to the secretary.
