DIOCESE OF AUCKLAND

His Lordship the Bishop, who has been engaged on episcopal visitation to the southern portion' of the diocese, returned to Auckland this week 'upon important business, and left again yesterday for Hamilton, Te Aroha, and Thames districts. Rev. Father Shore, of Mauritius, who has been a visitor to Auckland for a short time past, left this week for America. The mission at present being conducted at St. Patrick's Cathedral by the Marist Fathers is attended by very large numbers both morning and evening. The two principal solemnities of the 'mission took place this week ; that on Monday evening was in honor of our Blessed Lady, when a sermon appropriate of the occasion was preached by the Rev. Father O'Leary, S.M., and a procession in honor of our Lady was held, the sodalities of the Children of Mary and Guard of Honor participating in large numbers. On Thursday evening there was a procession in honor of the Blessed Sacrament, a special sermon being preached by the Rev. Father McCarthy, S.M. The mission concludes on Sunday next.

On Tuesday evening last, the Rev. Father O’Leary, S.M., addressed the men’s confraternity of the Sacred Heart at St. Benedict’s parish.

The recent sale of work in aid of the Mater Hospital funds was a pronounced success. The Sisters of the hospital are very grateful for the assistance given them by so many friends.

The annual meeting of St. Benedict’s Catholic Club was held in the club rooms on Tuesday evening last. The president (Mr. F. G. J. Temm) presided, the Rev. Fathers Colgan and Brady were present, and there was a good attendance of members. The Report and balance sheet showed the club to be in a very satisfactory condition, and after discussion was adopted unanimously. A vote of £5 was made to the Mater Hospital funds and the committee was also instructed to arrange for a suitable gift to the Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan, Y.G., towards the equipment of the sanctuary. The Right Rev. Mgr. Gillan, Y.G., is patron, and the election of officers for the ensuing term resulted as follows : —President, Mr. T. Molloy ; vicepresident, Mr. N. Mahoney; hon. sec., Mr. W. J. Bird: assistant secretary, Mr. E. Treaty; hon. treasurer, Mr. T. Lillis: auditor, Mr. A. Williams; librarian, J. Lillis : custodians, T. Frost and W. E. Tonks; committee, Messrs. Black, Butler, Gill, Lillis, Steele, and Rogers. Resolutions of sympathy were carried in connection with the'deaths of Messrs. A. Beehan, If. Reid, 11. Kelly, and IT. Monaghan, members recently killed in action. A vote of thanks was accorded the retiring president and committee for their services during the past term.

The death occurred yesterday at the Mater Hospital of the Rev. Father McLaughlin, who had been ailing for the past three years.

The third annual meeting of the Auckland Mercy Guild was held on Wednesday, April 24, at St. Mary’s Convent, Ponsonby. Mrs. J. J. O’Brien presided, the president (Mrs. H. Wright) also being present. The report stated that last year the guild met every Wednesday -from May 2 to December 5, the following articles being finished and sent out:—l26 day shirts, 6 undershirts, 56 suits of pyjamas, 107 pairs sox, 9 balaclavas, 8 nightshirts, 16 bandages, 17 pairs slippers, muffler and gloves to Red Cross Depot, also 3 mufflers, 9 balaclavas, 17 canvas belts, 40 pairs sox to Town Hall Depot, Each/ month we supplied 50

hold-alls and 50 hussifs to Town Hall Depot; 5 parcels of sox were sent to Rev. Father (Chaplain) Doyle, and 1 parcel to Rev. Father (Chaplain) O’Flynn. On October 19-“ Our Day’’ for the Red Cross, —the guild held a stall at Thames Hotel corner, the proceeds of the day amounting to .£lB3 3s 3d.

Mr. J. Reidy, of Khyber Pass, Auckland, has received word that his youngest son, Martin, who left with the 21st Reinforcements, was seriously wounded in action in France, and is now lying in the Southwark Military Hospital, suffering from gun shot wounds in the right and left shoulders. Of his three brothers who left New Zealand to serve, Michael is in camp on Salisbury Plains, and Patrick and Daniel are at the front. Another brother is Rev. Brother Luke, of the Marist Brothers’ teaching staff, Christchurch. Their sister, Mary, is at present nursing at St.Omer, in France, having been doing duty for the past three year.?.
