OBITUARY

\ MR. MICHAEL CURRAN, WAIKIWI. There passed away recently at his residence, Waikiwi, one of the earliest of the band of pioneer Catholics that settled in Southland in the person of Mr. Michael Curran. Deceased was born in the parish of Headford, County Galway, Ireland, in 1833. Leaving for New Zealand in the sailing ship Storm Cloud, he arrived at Bluff in 1862. For 6ix years after his arrival he worked on various farms and stations throughout Southland, after which he occupied land in the . Waikiwi district, where he had farmed successfully ever since. About 12 months ago he began to fail in health, and continued to get weaker till Sunday, 3rd inst., when he died fortified by all the rites of Holy Church. The late Mr. Curran was of a very bright and genial disposition, and made for himself a wide circle of friends during his long lifetime. His funeral was one of the largest seen in the district for many years. The Very Rev. Father O'Neill officiated at the graveside. The deceased leaves a grown-up family of one son and three daughters to mourn their loss. —R.I.P.
