SACRED HEART GIRLS' COLLEGE, CHRISTCHURCH.

The annual entertainment , prior to the Christmas vacation': by the' pupils of ,- r the Sisters of the 1 . Missions was".given on Wednesday afternoon, December 12, the proceeds being, as in previous years,' devoted' to patriotic : or, charitable purposes. V The pb ject selected 'to benefit on this occasion was the orphanage of the Order_at Deal, England.-V; His Lordship Bishop Brodie presided, and; a number of the clergy were ; present. 3- A diversified and excellently arranged programme was presented. Musically the very fine orchestra of the college occupied prominence, and its rendition of the selections '"lrvina," '.-The Angelus," and i "Moon Madrigal" revealed great efficiency. In individual numbers the piano, " harp, and violin , selections were performed with .much artistic ability. Choruses, vocal solos, action songs, part songs (with J instrumental , accompaniment), vocal quartette, and combined vocal and instrumental quartette interspersed: the programme with pleasing effect. A scene from "The Last of • the Vestals" was admirably performed by: i eleven pupils, and evidenced considerable aptitude, combined with "careful training. An effective tableau, "Regina Pacis," completed a thoroughly enjoyable entertainment. .„_'/ ;. ,:-.., The annual report and prize list were as follow: :, The primary division was examined on October 3 by Mr. S. C. Owen, and received the following report "The work of this school reaches a high level of attainment. x Liberal programmes on the various subjects have been well treated by the different teachers. The scholars are well-behaved, and work with a commendable alacrity. The written tests were neatly done, and of. a very satisfactory nature. The oral tests elicited bright and intelligent answers, and the teachers are to be commended on the bright spirit of work which prevails throughout. Handwork and' singing have both received generous consideration." The Education Department's Inspector of Secondary Schools (Mr. T. R. Cresswell, M.A.) examined the secondary division on October 23, and reported as follows:—"There are 43 girls in the secondary department, of whom 27 take a general course, comprising English grammar and literature, Latin and French, mathematics, history, geography, and science. The other pupils (1.6) take a commercial course of English grammar and literature, French, arithmetic, bookkeeping, typewriting, shorthand, commercial correspondence and business methods. Some short tests were given in Latin, English, arithmetic, etc., and it was evident that the work was being carried out on sound lines, particularly in the matter of oral expression The note books in science are neat and form a good record of the work done. The commercial course is evidently a thorough one, and forms an excellent preparation for office work, being a good training in neatness, accuracy, and knowledge of business methods. The teachers are enthusiastic and capable, and the deportment of the pupils left nothing to be desired."Dux of school, Ina Campbell ;• next in merit: M. Williams, A. Joyce, W. O'Loughlin, A. Shelley. Good Conduct: Jean Mills.
