A spiritual retreat for ladies, to be conducted by a Jesuit Father, will commence at the Convent of the Dominican Nuns, Teschemakers, on Thursday, December 27. A notification relating thereto appears in this issue of the Tablet. The following students of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel, have kept terms at Otago University Hugh J. O’Neill (Dunedin) and Arthur Mcßae (Wellington), second year’s terms; James Lennon (Dunedin), Charles Tylee (Dunedin), and . James Foley (Auckland),, first year’s terms. • In connection with Baby Week, the members of St. Joseph s Patriotic and Red Cross- Guild will occupy their usual stand—the Government Life Insurance corner, Rattray Street, on Friday next, on the occasion of the street collection in aid of the “Save the Baby” fund. The stand will be in charge of the president of the guild (Mrs. A. H. Stone), who will be glad to receive the assistance of active workers, and the support of friends generally. V . - At the parochial schools, North-East Valley, last Thursday evening a wedding presentation was made to Miss Dormer, president of the Children of Mary, by the members of the sodality. expressed the good wishes of all for her future, hoping, iii conclusion, that all her troubles would be little ones. ... , ' ;. •- His Lordship Bishop Verdou returned on Tuesday evening to Dunedin from ’his episcopal ;• visitation of portions of the diocese. On next Sunday^(iNovemher 4) his Lordship will visit Gore, and afterwards Riversdale and Queenstown to administer the Sacrament of .Confirmation. Since recently commencing his visitation of the diocese Dr. Verdon has confirmed 13 candidates at Waihola, 12 at Balclutha, 8 at Owaka, 64 at Lawrence, 60 at Alexandra, Clyde and Bald Hi 11, 57 at Cromwell and Hawea, 13. at Roxburgh, and 12 at Miller’s Flat. Special prominence was given by the Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm., in the notices at St. Joseph’s Cathedral on Sunday to the series of demonstrations to commence on the following day, and continue throughout the week in the' interests of infant life in the Dominion. The Very Rev. Administrator, who is an executive member of the local Association for the Protection of Women and Children, ' was one' of the selected speakers at the inauguration ceremony in connection with Dominion Baby Week at the Burns Hall on Monday afternoon. There was a good attendance of working members of St. Joseph’s Red Cross and Patriotic Guild at the rooms, St. Joseph’s Hall, Rattray Street, on last Wednesday afternoon, where partriotic work is being done this month. It is pleasing to note the increasing number of home-workers on the guild’s list, these sending in a good number of finished articles. There is material on hand, however, for many more workers, and those who are unable to attend the regular classes may be supplied with the necessaries on application to the president (Mrs. A. H. Stone), on any Tuesday or Wednesday afternoon or Tuesday evening. The 'parish committee of St. Joseph’s Cathedral branch of the Catholic Federation met on last Sunday evening in St. Joseph’s Hall. The president (Very Rev. Father Coffey, Adm.) presided, and there was a good attendance; The secretary (Mr. J. Airey) reported that the membership roll of the whole parochial district now probably exceeds the 1000 mark as the result of the past three months’ canvassing. A complete register of those comprised within the limits represented by the _ Cathedral congregation had also been completed, and the district, mainly the city proper, subdivided in convenient sections for final canvassing, and for other useful purposes.
