Timaru
(From our own correspondent.) October 29. His Lordship Bishop Brodie is to visit Timaru on Sunday, November 11 to administer the Sacrament of Confirmation. •' - All arrangements are now well in hand for the garden fete which is to be held in the priory grounds on the afternoon and evening of Thursday, November 15. The members of St. Anne’s Guild have undertaken the management of the home and produce stall, and they have gathered together a collection of useful tides which will appeal especially to mothers and families. The Children of Mary have the fancy and work stall, and they also have many useful and novel articles that ought to command a ready sale. There is to be a refreshment stall for the dispensing of .afternoon tea and supper in the evening. The children are to be well catered for with a sweets stall, a dip, and a Christmas tree, and in addition to these there are to be numerous other side-shows and attractions. ' An orchestra has been engaged to give musical selections, and a concert is being arranged for both afternoon and , evening. As the object of the garden fete is to reduce •W, • the debt on the church, it being now some years since ' anything. has been done for that object, the committee hope that, given a fine day and the co-operation of the parishioners, the fete will bo not only a pleasant means
of spending ah;afternoon and evening, but that it will also be a gratifying financial success. •; A very enthusiastic meeting was held in the parish hall on Sunday, October 21, to make arrangements for a fitting- celebration of - thecentenary of the Marist Brothers' Order. The Very Rev. Dean Tubman, S.M., presided. Mr. J. G. Venning was appointed treasurer, and Mr. J. M. Dunne secretary. It was arranged to present the Brothers with an address and purse of sovereigns as a token of appreciation from the people of the parish. The purpose of the monetary offering is to assist the Brothers in the building of a House of Studies, in this Dominion, which has now been constituted a separate province of the Order. It is to be hoped that every Catholic worthy of the name will rally round the Brothers on this unique occasion, and show to the world their deep appreciation of the great work of Catholic education. The matter has the wholehearted support of our beloved Bishop, who' will deliver an address on the occasion of the presentation, which takes place on Monday evening, November 12, in the hall, Craigie Avenue.
