ARCHDIOCESE OP WELLINGTON (From our own correspondent.) July 21. His Grace Archbishop O'Shea left for Palmerston North this morning and will preach there on Sunday night. At a lecture given in the Concert Chamber of the Town Hall last Thursday, Colonel J. G. Hughes, who went through the Gallipoli campaign, paid a glowing tribute to the noble and heroic work of the late Rev. Father McMenamin and the Rev. Father Dore, who went at chaplains to the Main Body. I very much regret to record the death of Mrs. Edmond Carrigan, wife of Bro. Edmond Carrigan, J.P., senior trustee of St. Patrick's branch of the Hibernian Society, which occurred at her residence, Austin street, last Sunday morning. The deceased lady had been in delicate health for the past two years, but she was able to get about, and only took" to her

bed on the ; Saturday 1 prior to v her death. She was a staunch Catholic, and endeared herself to all those who came in. contact with; her. • Much-sympathy is felt for her bereaved husband and family. The interment took place on Monday ..and. was private. The Rev. Father Hurley, S.M., attended the deceased in her last illness; and administered the last Sacraments. In addition to her husband ■, who is at present lying dangerously ill, she leaves a family of three daughters and one son. The daughters are Mrs. Thomas Madden, Mrs. Jago, and Miss Eileen Carrigan, and the son Mr. James Carrigan.—R.l.P. . • The annual schools’ social took place last Wednesday at the Town Hall and was a great success both financially and socially. Among those present were his Grace Archbishop O’Shea, the Ven. Archdeacon Devoy, the Very Rev. Dean Holley, and the Rev. Fathers S. Mahony, Hurley, Smyth, O’Connor, Venning, and Mark Devoy. The first part of the evening was devoted to the screening of a fine selection of pictures kindly lent by the N.Z. Pictures Supplies, Ltd. Mr. W. McLoughlin’s orchestra supplied the music, and an energetic and devoted band of ladies from the four city parishes provided and dispensed the refreshments free of all cost to the committeea very large undertaking when it is considered that the attendance at the social must have numbered some 3000 people. The profits from the social will be devoted to the Catholic education fund, and if the attendance can be taken as a basis for estimating the profits, this year’s result should exceed last year’s handsome net profit of £IBO. The committee, and especially the ladies, who under the direction of the Ven. Archdeacon Devoy and the Rev. Fathers Hurley, Mahony, and Smyth, worked so hard to make the function such a success, are deserving of every praise. CATHOLIC FIELD SERVICE FUND. , The Dominion treasurer of the N.Z.
