THE LATE MRS O’REGAN, INANGAHUA VALLEY

There passed away at her. home in the Inangahua Valley, on Sunday, 3rd inst., Mrs. P. O’Regan, at the ripe age of 78 years. The deceased lady had been in failing healMi for some time (writes a correspondent), and her death was not unexpected, but the sad event nevertheless excited general and genuine regret throughout the district in which she had resided so long. Born at Clonakilty, in the County of Cork, Mrs. O’Regan came to Australia in 1859, and was married at St. Mary’s Cathedral, Sydney, in 1867, in which year she accompanied her husband to New Zealand, arriving at Hokitika. Subsequently Mr. and Mrs. Regan resided some years at Charleston, then a flourishing goldfield, but in 1872 the family removed to a farm in the Inangahua Valley, the journey up the Buller River being made in a cargo boat, for in those far-off days no road had been made through the famous gorge. The deceased was ever a staunch upholder of faith and fatherland, and during her long residence in the district was deservedly popular for her hospitable and kindly disposition. The funeral, which took place on Wednesday, 6th inst., was largely attended, and included visitors from Murchison, Grcymouth, and the Grey Valley. The cortege proceeded first to the Church of the Sacred Heart, Reefton, after which the interment took place in the old cemetery. The Bov. Father Eccleton, S.M., who officiated, paid a touching tribute to the deceased. Mrs. O’Regan is survived by her husband, three sous, and one daughter. The eldest sou,

Mr. P. J. O’Regan, is the well-known barrister of

Wellington.-—R. I. P.
