Ashburton
(From our own correspondent.) May 11. A social evening, combined with a presentation to two departing soldiers, Messrs. J. B. McCormick and P. Pendergast, was held in the Catholic Boys' School on Wednesday evening last. Mr. M. J. Burgess presided, and apologies were tendered on ..behalf of the Very Rev. Dean O'Donnell, and Rev. Father J. Hanrahan. There was a good attendance and a programme of progressive euchre interspersed with musical numbers was greatly enjoyed. On behalf of the committee Mr. W. J. Cunningham presented the two soldiers with useful presents, and referred to the popularity and esteem in which they were held. Messrs. F. K. Cooper, T. Brophy, D. McDonnell, and the chairman also spoke in eulogistic terms. Refreshments were served ' under y the supervision of Mrs. Walsh; j assisted by ladies* of the Catholic Red Cross Society. The very successful event terminated with cheers for the boys and the sinking of the National ;Axi\lie^^^^^i^^^: !i rif^f^^j'^-
